Engine Oil Level – Overfull Slightly.

Folks,

I have just changed the oil on my TD4 and having left it to stand in the garage for about 36 Hrs it appears that I have overfilled it slightly. The level is approximately 2.5 - 3mm above the MAX on the dipstick. Anyone know how critical is this on this engine (2.2 TD4) bearing in mind the caution stated in the handbook about overfilling. Assuming the difference between the MAX and MIN marks is about 1.5 Litres. I cannot have overfilled by much (must have got carried away).

The main dealer that serviced my wife’s Nissan Note last year overfilled the oil by the same amount. When I questioned it, they said it wouldn’t be a problem, only an issue if it had been over grossly overfilled.

I recall all my cars having been overfilled by that amount by the dealers. It's not an issue. If it was grossly overfilled, you'd soon know about it Thumbs Up Gone - TD4 XS Auto, Sumatra Black, Mud flaps and side strips, clear indicators, private plate, privacy glass

It'll be fine, although saying that I did take a drop out of ours when it came back overfull.

However from what I understand there is a system on LR's that dumps oil when it's too-overfull into the exhaust so as not to cause damage from overfilling Mine: 2012 Golf GTI Edition 35

Thanks for the replies chaps.

First time I’ve changed the oil on the FL2. I must admit the oil filter was easier to change than I imagined, it’s in the worst possible place to get to (although the sump cover plate is quicker to remove and lighter than my old FL1).
