What do you do to vehicles joining the motoway?

i do believe the highway code says you dont need to give way, but isnt it just courtesy to move over and let people join??

The reason i ask is i had some tosser in a merc who would not move over earlier today while joinging the m5, there were no other vehicles in lanes 2 or 3!

I move out if possible, or make room for them to slip into

dont think blinkers were an issue, cos he managed to flick me the V when i got in front of him!!

Complete idiots, I followed someone up a slip road earlier, they went straight into lane 1 at 40mph!!!
Those crap information films we use to see years ago are needed.

To answer the question, I move out and leave room, technically those on the slip road must give way to traffic already on the carriageway, but common sense and courtesy seems to be in short supply.

A friend of mine used to have a Austin Montego 1300 and he said he never used the motorways because it wouldnt go fast enough to get on it.

I try to anticipate and If there's nothing else around I'll already be in lane 2. If it's busy I'll try to give some space but I do expect those joining a motorway to be doing their best to synchronise their speed.

I was going down the M5 today in my Mercedes at 70mph in the inside lane when this delinquent in a Freelander 2 passed me on the slip road doing about 90mph, eating a McDonalds and a full coke, he cut right in front of me, I gave him a 'Churchill' and he threw his McDonalds out the window at me.

Silver coloured I believe.

Not your fault landy, it is courteous to move over especially if lanes 2 and 3 are clear - the issue was the german car driver they think they own the road, don't use indicators and have their fog lights on all the time - bet his name was Richard Head

Hmm, Mercedes drivers seem to have taken over where BMW drivers left off. The same attitude problem also appears to affect Audi drivers too. Must be something to do with German cars, unhappy with their purchases perhaps?  Poke it, Poke it, make it do it again!!

Its considered courteous to move but to be honest I tend now not to bother, normally the vehicle joining is supposed to adjust his speed accordingly to join down the other traffic and with todays drivers who just go hell for leather down the slip road, expect every one to move out of the way, no indicators, go straight from the slip road to lane three, then realise there was nothing in front of them to overtake anyway, or you move over again they don't indicate or even acknowlage the fact you have moved over to let them join, they then tear off leaving you out in the middle lane so you have moved over they joined, floored it and you return to Lane One having overtaken no one, or the best one is the who gesticulates at you for not moving over when you have a vehicle alongside you overtaking you, where the does he think you can go, does he not know that the faster he is joining the Motorway and he is supposed to give way as you have right of way.

What happened to "give way to traffic on your right" or is this way too old fashioned or not taught aymore? Tony

Driving up the A1 last night about 8pm and a very nice car joined the road from a slip road at about 1,000,000 mph forcing the car in the left lane to take avoiding action which was to pull out infront of me in the fast lane. There was just enough space for the car but I did have to brake very hard.....

Interesting topic, for everyone's information according to the highway code, no one ever has right of way, we all drive as a privilege not as a right. that is why the privilege is revoked when you are naughty and they take away your license. Drivers do however have priorities, and those already traveling on a road have the highest priority and a legal right to proceed.

The best I can offer is the following extract from the HC:

When changing direction/joining roads, never carry out a maneuver that will cause another driver to change direction or speed.

Something many should take account of on today's roads.

Also, what is this new fad of doing 60 in 70 limits in the right hand lane? if people do not know the national speed limit on a dual carriageway is 70 unless otherwise marked they should re-take their tests!  MY2014 SD4 XS

Although I have always moved from lane 1 to lane 2 (where ever possible) to allow people to join, over the last couple of years I've noticed that those people joining the motorway seem to assume that this is going to happen and simply pull out whatever! It can get bleedin' dangerous at times now!
