The strips are just metal edge protection. The problem is they rust at the ends where they have been cut, this causes the metal inside to blister and they become slack and can just fall off.
Replaced mine with some edge protection strips from eBay at a fraction of the cost of the LR ones. Just cut to length. They also look better than the original. Now at the point when I learn something new something old is lost out the other side !
Now retired so it doesn't matter anymore.
Freelander now gone.

For my MY2011 Freelander first arch rubber was lost about 2013 (got new under the warranty). In the next years another ones need to be replaced. There are poor quality, metal bar inside the rubber breaks at the end and doesn't hold any more MY2011 TD4 S Manual

Youd have though for a car thats going to get wet and muddy lots of the time the internals would have been stainless or zinc coated steel wouldnt you?
Do the new Evoques and Discovery have the same stuff?

I think they have always been fitted as standard. Later models (ie my MY13) have a different pattern for the front nearside - the profile is as though there is an extra rubber tube fitted at the inside edge. I think this is to keep water splashes away from the air intake.
They are very prone to degradation and damage. My ex demonstrator had a damaged one after 5000 miles! Ex AA Series III LWB Safari - Gone
300TDi Disco (bought new - terrible car) sent back after 18 months
Freelander 1 Estate - leased, given back at end of lease
200TDi Disco (bought from a mate with 100,000 on the clock) - Gone
Disco 2 TD5 - sold and exported to France
FR2 TD4 GS - Gone
FR2 SD4 HSE - Now changed for a DS
New model ex-demo Evoque S 180 in white
Unable to order a new DS, so gave up. Now have a Volvo S90 Recharge.

They are cheap enough from LR to just replace them every couple of years anyway. Freelander 2 HSE Lux 2013MY - Barolo Black with Ivory Leather. Alpine DVD - Privacy -Evoque 20" Dynamic Wheels and more to come.........

Our 59 plate FL2 (33000 miles) appears to be suffering the distorted wheel arch rubber problem (on the passenger side rear).

Was not referred to in the Aug 15 main dealer scheduled service, so I can only assume its started to occur since then.

At the main dealer today to look at rust spots (apparently the rubbers become loose due to metal clips within them corroding?) I have since noticed on the part of the arch that should be protected by the above mentioned rubber (that must have been hidden by the rubber) and to ask the main dealer to submit to LR (I know the car is just over 6 years old).

Has anyone had any success in getting LR to fund repair or part fund repair of the corrosion in this instance? Similarly has anyone ascertained if the rust is from the outside, possibly caused during the fitting procedure of the rubber, from any spot welding, or is it rust coming through from the "inside" edge.

At present I can't see much rust, the spots appear to be very small with a bit of paint bubbling but its annoying that the design appears to be flawed. At present the areas have been covered with grease. I Have not looked at the other arches as the rubbers seem intact.

Is this a well known "Achilles Heal" of the FL2? Does anyone know if LR has acknowledged this in any way to either main dealer or customer?

Wheel arch rubbers

Hi all,

In one of my previous posts I had a moan about the wheel arch rubbers which look pretty rubbish now (all coming away). Anyway when replacing im not overly keen on spending £40+ if they do the same after some time. Has anyone tried:

-UAAOxy3zNSkPBe" target="_blank" class="postlink" rel="nofollow">http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Large-Black-Car-...xy3zNSkPBe

Seem a lot cheaper but just wanted to know what most people tend to do. Thumbs Up 2010 HSE SD4 in Santorini black

All that U profile edge trim seems to have a steel insert and thats what causes the problem as when its cut the bare ends are expose, wet gets in and it corrodes and eventually lifts and blisters it after a relatively short time.
Im surprised the genuine LR ones dont come sealed so water cannot get inside them but it appears they dont? whats needed is to find some that use a stainless steel inside and that would solve most of the problems and certainly make them last longer?
Whether theres a marine grade you can get?

I call that ' Yorkshire trim' cheaper than proper but does what it says on the tin, All you need to is cover the edge no need for the genuine fat trim ,
when its fitted its less visible than before and traps less muck, mines must have been on 2 years now At work

Yeah that's what I thought. What size trim did you get? If you can't remember I'll go measure some shortly. 2010 HSE SD4 in Santorini black
