Scotland 2012 Freelander 2 TD4 GS Manual Firenze Red

I have only had my 2012 freelander 2 for a month. and an avid reader of this forum.Reading this topic this morning I went out to the car and found that 2 of the strips were missing all together and 2 were flared and hard at the ends. Project for the day to remove all strips ,clean and paint behind them and I have ordered the strip as recommended by Chicken George
Thanks for this forum

My wifes 07 plate has never had any on in our 3yrs of ownership. My 09 had them fitted but they were getting a little worst for wear so they were removed and I've never replaced them as I think they harbour moisture and grit . They don't seem to have a good lifespan anyway , maybe 2/3 years at best. With them removed you can keep a check on the arch lip and giive them a thorough clean every wash .

bxzx16v is there any rust on the arches of your wife's 07? Have you had to paint them or treat any rust?

When I got my 2008 FL2 all the wheel arch lip trims were missing although the metal lip was still in good condition. Given that this is a common corrosion point on many even quite modern cars, presumably due to the amount of stones, dirt and grit that gets thrown up by the wheels and chips the paint away, I decided to replace them.

just for "belt and braces", I squirted a load of Dinitrol into the open ends of the cavity in the new trims before fitting them, I did this from both ends and left them for a while with the ends suspended for the fluid to percolate through. I'm hoping this will help to prevent any further corrosion in this area.

Hi CliveS, I'm trying to work out if the trims do more harm than good. On my car the rust occurs only on the hidden areas so there has to be a case to run without them. This also suggests (to me) that the rust isn't due to stone damage as the unprotected areas are fine! A couple of years ago I went through them fully as in my post above. The other day I removed the trims to check & discovered rust again, but only under the rubbers. Apart from fending off the occasional stone their only other purpose would seem to be to close the joint between the inner & outer wing panels. I'm not sure how important that really is though.

No rust on the 07 plate , very minor bit on my 09 . Mine are staying off for good .

Canada 2008 LR2 i6 SE Auto Rimini Red

Picked up a set of replacements this morning. Like a few on here, I want to prevent stone chips from occurring on there, and with the amount of gravel/dirt roads in the Canadian Prairies I'd already had to touch up a few areas.

My wheel arches have no rust and I'll wash them and rust-proof them prior to installation. I'll shoot in some spray rustproofing into the trims as well (I use Rust Cure Formula 3000 from Canadian Tire), and hopefully with that the metal inside the rubber trims doesn't start bubbling right away.

As a side note... I wanted to get this taken care of right away so got the rubber trims, however as a long-term solution I wonder if either 3M clear wrap or box-liner would be appropriate to apply to the wheel arches in order to offer some long-lasting protection.

Cheers

That's a good find CG Thumbs Up

I need to replace mine but as the freely is now 10 years old I don't think the 'right guard' is necessary - just something equivalent.

What worries me more are the comments about rust being hidden beneath the guards! 2002 Honda VFR800

CG; that's the same stuff (and supplier) that I got for mine, 5 metres cut to the correct lengths and with a big squirt of Dinitrol into each end before fitting Thumbs Up
