wipers on start up?

Has anyone had the same problem with the “rain sensing “wipers as me?

When I start up the car the wipers do one wipe of the screen? Now this is a bone dry screen, not a drop of water on it? Thing is if there is any grit on the screen it’s going to scratch the hell out of the screen.

I have tried adjusting the sensor but does not make any difference

The same applies to mine. I wonder what would happen if if it did it when the wipers were frozen to the screen one winter's morn!
I try to remember to switch off the auto every evening.

Here's an interesting twist on rain sensing wipers ...

Just completed a bit of a road trip Manchester - Inverness and return, 800 miles in just over 24 hours.

Lots of bugs about and a bit of rain on the way up Wed pm. Had the rain sensing on and they were working. I stopped to de-bug the windscreen, I always carry a small garden spray with a 50/50 mix of screen wash to help with this task, stopped in a lay by and left the engine running. Sprayed the screen and started wiping away the bugs, then sprayed some more while I was wiping ... second spray covered the rain sensor, wipers started up and nearly took my hand off. Of course didn't know where the rain sensor was until this happened - I do now!!!

When I first got the car I had the same problem - a single wipe. Doesn't seem to do it anymore - but I do live in a hot climate and summer is kicking in! Automatic headlights... now thats a different matter - come on mid afternoon before it's dark - where is the sensor / adjustment for those?

The ambient light sensor is part of the rain sensor module. This is located behind the cover for the rear view mirror at the top of the screen. You will be able to see it if you look carefully from outside the vehicle. You cannot adjust the sensitivity of this device. You have to remember the limitations, much like the limitations of the solar sensor that is used on the climate system, it can only sense the correct light level when it is incident on the screen at the point where the sensor is.

I have not had this problem since we got the car. Have gone to start the vehicle now-wipers stayed off.How can this be different on different vehicles. Either they all do it or none of them do it !

Re: wipers on start-up

Your wipers probably are set in "service" position -page 84 of the owner's manual (USA)

My HSE does the same, in fact so does our Compnay Jag & Honda also so does the wives Citroen C3 and my old Xsara.

So I hopes this helps:

In previous cars that I have owned, the owners handbook said that the single swipe is to inform you that the systems is turned on, so if you turn the car off with the Auto still set on next time you power up the car the wipers will swipe once to say that the system is active again.

Wipers and sensing module

The Freely II delivered in Germany does have a rotating switch on the wiper device to adjust the rain sensor sensitivity.
With the latest (July) software-update the wipers will not carry out a "dry run" if in automatic position when ignition key is inserted.
So go and see your friendly dealer.
