I understand where he is coming from, an old mechanic who doesn't trust/like anything that he doesn't know intimately. But it's 2018 the green activists are going to get anything that doesn't meet Euro1001 emissions banned so the systems are going to get more and more complicated just to cope with ever silly rules - you will have to "invest" in the relevant diagnostics to be able to diagnose problems (or even change brake pads!).

My son living in Kenya 200km north of Nairobi and has a Toyota Hilux pickup 3 litre diesel, he travels around the country between and on farms and it spends about 75% of it's time off tarmac (I say off tarmac since the roads can be worse than you would encounter on a LR experience day). He gets it serviced by a local garage and it costs about £75 a time (every 6k miles since it's classed as arduous conditions). It's done over 100k miles and the only problems have been with suspension and especially shockers wearing out which is not surprising considering the use it gets but the point is that local garages seem to be able to fix things without fancy equipment. This is what the new Defender needs to be able to replicate and Land Rover could learn a lot from seeing how these vehicles are built and used but I fear that it's too late - or perhaps they are not interested anyway. 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

Was tending to agree with his sentiments, then got a bit concerned when he said "they don't do Diesel engines".

Electronics are cheaper than mechanical parts, the less machining and fitting the cheaper the manufacturing process, the average failure rate on electronics is 6-7 years in the real world the most failures are in the first six month to a year, after that ten years is or a bit more is more the average.

Problem is a blacksmith (ok machinist) can manufacture a replacement gear should you break one.

@Andy131 Then as a electronics and software engineer you will know that software overcomes all, it is immaterial that a chip or processor becomes outdated software can be written to overcome the obsolescence. I suspect that in the future there will be standard ECU's that you or a dealer can plug into a OS machine with the appropriate software loaded and configure any ECU, be it engine or other system on a vehicle to operate either current models or be backward compatible.

The man speaks a lot of sense and mirrors my thoughts about the D3/4.
