I understand where he is coming from, an old mechanic who doesn't trust/like anything that he doesn't know intimately. But it's 2018 the green activists are going to get anything that doesn't meet Euro1001 emissions banned so the systems are going to get more and more complicated just to cope with ever silly rules - you will have to "invest" in the relevant diagnostics to be able to diagnose problems (or even change brake pads!).

Got to agree that a lot of the young designers haven't tried to change a clutch on the driveway, with a set of draper lead spanners, and maybe it should be part of the first year at Uni - they certainly wouldn't design a Disco 3 tooth belt that needs the body to come off for a routine service item.

Would I trust a Land Rover to get me to Africa (and back), our last FL1 got us to the Sahara and back. So why not?

Would I have a Disco 3 - probably not, but a Disco 4 in a heartbeat, if only I could afford to fuel/tax it. Tangiers Orange - gone, missing her
Replaced by Ewok what a mistake - now a happy Disco Sport owner

good video and the guy talks a lot of sense.

but it's not just Landrovers, all modern vehicles have similar issues for the mechanic.

My son living in Kenya 200km north of Nairobi and has a Toyota Hilux pickup 3 litre diesel, he travels around the country between and on farms and it spends about 75% of it's time off tarmac (I say off tarmac since the roads can be worse than you would encounter on a LR experience day). He gets it serviced by a local garage and it costs about £75 a time (every 6k miles since it's classed as arduous conditions). It's done over 100k miles and the only problems have been with suspension and especially shockers wearing out which is not surprising considering the use it gets but the point is that local garages seem to be able to fix things without fancy equipment. This is what the new Defender needs to be able to replicate and Land Rover could learn a lot from seeing how these vehicles are built and used but I fear that it's too late - or perhaps they are not interested anyway. 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

Was tending to agree with his sentiments, then got a bit concerned when he said "they don't do Diesel engines". Shocked

Then realised the LR he was stood beside and referring to was a left hand drive, complete with squarer number plate plinth.
So after concluding the guy doesn't know what he's talking about if he doesn't know the D3's engine availability and probably just commenting on this LHD that someone brought into him ....... I find out that his business is in Canada. Rolling Eyes
(The giveaway should've been when he called it an LR3 in the opening sequence.)

So respect duly restored. Thumbs Up FL2 now gone and have a couple of items left for sale:-

All very well, but I don't read his YT page, just watched the vid, and no hint on there.

It was the North Yorks accent that also threw me as I was wondering if he were close by me. FL2 now gone and have a couple of items left for sale:-

A great video, with some well presented thoughts.

Fortunately / Unfortunately (choose the word which best suits your point of view) Land Rover has not only moved forward with the times but has also purposely moved upmarket to increase their profit per vehicle.

Personally I like my bit of comfort, but I could not justify spending much more on my transport needs.

As for progress, I heard the same views from the electro-mechanical engineers, who were complaining about the world when I first joined the world of electronics some 60 years ago.

Just over a hundred years ago blacksmiths were having learn new skills to become enginesmiths, you can't stop progress.

What is needed is more attention being given to life long maintenance and repair at the development stage. They should remember the longer a car lasts, the more enviromentally friendly it is. FL2 XS SD4 Auto 2010 2012-2017 (21k - 91k miles) (MY2011)

Electronics are cheaper than mechanical parts, the less machining and fitting the cheaper the manufacturing process, the average failure rate on electronics is 6-7 years in the real world the most failures are in the first six month to a year, after that ten years is or a bit more is more the average.
D3's are now into electronic failure stage as are early Freelies, electronics are more prone to failure when switched on and off frequently therefore a low mileage car due to short journeys is more at risk than a high mileage car covering long journeys.
Having a 9 speed box and no low ratio box together with electronic control is cheaper than a 5 or 6 speed box with a low ratio box and limited slip diffs and probably better for grip. my PC is slightly to the right of Genghis

Problem is a blacksmith (ok machinist) can manufacture a replacement gear should you break one.

Once an integrated circuit is lets say 10 years old, it will have been out of production for 3-4years, so no more parts availability. so your fairly rust free, mechanically sound car is scrap for want of a £5 part for a circuit board - and no-one is going to be able to knock one up in a shed in Birmingham.

We are the disposable generation, cars will last 10 years and then become uneconomical to repair.
Who do you blame for this waste, and environmentally unsound practice ?

The loonies that want us to drive ever more complex cars, so that we don't produce smoke in their neighbourhood - anyone estimate haw much CO2 and smoke is generated by producing disposable cars, rather than defenders that last 30 years?

Me I have a little sympathy with those that feel out of depth with modern technology - I started off as a mechanical fitter, then "upskilled" to electrician, then to electrical designer and to writing automation software, it feels like you have to keep running just to stand still. Tangiers Orange - gone, missing her

@Andy131 Then as a electronics and software engineer you will know that software overcomes all, it is immaterial that a chip or processor becomes outdated software can be written to overcome the obsolescence. I suspect that in the future there will be standard ECU's that you or a dealer can plug into a OS machine with the appropriate software loaded and configure any ECU, be it engine or other system on a vehicle to operate either current models or be backward compatible.
That won't stop them failing however they will be considerably cheaper than a low ratio box or LSD for a LR, Jaguar or other make some 50 odd years down the line, to rebuild the axle on my classic sports car is now about £4K by a specialist and I bought two for £74.00 in 1973 Sad my PC is slightly to the right of Genghis

The man speaks a lot of sense and mirrors my thoughts about the D3/4.
After 11 happy years in my Disco 2 it would have been the logical progression to trade up to a D3 or 4. Problem being for me I do most of my own maintenance and the old D2 was just a big mechano set with fairly limited electronics that I could mostly fix on the driveway. D3 and 4 a totally different proposition and with so many expensive systems that do not have the best reliability record I just could not stand the thought of their wallet emptying ability.
I made the decision with my head rather than my heart and bought the Freelander 2 and Im happy that I did. Reliability and economy are much better and ability to do everything I need (with the exception of load carrying occasionally) make it an ideal vehicle for me.
I do still enviously look at late model D4s Bow down Landrover - turning owners into mechanics since 1948
