First World Problem

Right. I am about to come into some inheritance and have decided that some of it should be put aside and used as a "feck it, I want it so I'll have it" fund. Probably talking £5k or so (although if serious would consider selling the FL2 to add to fund).

My foolish mind is currently thinking:

1) A Defender/90
2) A Disco 3
3) Treat my current FL2 to some toys. But I don't know which.

Option 1 is stupid. I don't need it, it'll cost many more pounds within days likely and it'll be bloody uncomfortable. But I've ALWAYS wanted one.

Option 2 likely the same as option 1 but comfortable.

Option 3 I don't know what to get. It's a 2011 GS TD4. But I like toys.

Poor me. Learned to drive in 2011.
Bought a Micra - great little car
"Upgraded" to Kia Sportage - hated it
Proper upgrade to FL2 TD4 GS 60 reg Facelift - tailgate paint issues, fuel gauge rewire, transfer box failure at 36k miles, clutch at 60k
Reconditioned diff at 70k ish
Sold at 84k and now on a DS. Terribly unreliable.
Sold DS for a 2021 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV. Fingers crossed....
Sold Outlander for a 2014 SD4 SE Tech because I’m mental

IMO

1) No dont do it - you wont get much of a Defender for £5K these days. I had a truck cab SWB turbo diesel with 2" lift. Did a V8 conversion myself. Was great off road but on-road was just tiresome, uncomfortable and a bit scary at times.

2) Disco 3 - loads of expensive electrical problems so often found cheaper than older Disco 2.

3) Why not.

Personally Id go for a Disco 2 TD5 or V8 - BUT must have good chassis. I had a TD5 and waxoyled inside and out (18 years later I see its still has a current VED ) Nice to drive - more useful than defender - relatively simple, not a lot more complicated than a Defender - good off road too.

Something like this

Ditto what Jules said, nice car but I wouldn't pay that much for it. Common sense isn't very common.

sitting on money over here now returns nothing, in 12 months time he might just have accrued £1.50 interest on his £5k

if you don't need it for anything else and you want a play toy that's more comfortable than a defender but less expensive to maintain than a D3 then find yourself a decent D2.

depending on how things go in about 18 months - 2 years I could be getting a share of my mums house sale, as she is moving into a soon to be built granny annex at my brothers new house and selling our old family house.

if that works out then I would like to get a late D2 Auto, and kit it out for light expedition (awnings, split charge, stowage racks etc) just to use for quick weekends/weeks away and as a weekend workhorse.

If you sit on it long enough it will pay for your funeral.

If you have a 'direct cremation' it will only cost £600. As per David Bowie, then you have plenty left over for toys! Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!

Option 2 sounds the best to me. You can get some really nice toys for your FL2 with that money. Just do some research and decide what sounds exciting for you to get. That's what I'd do, at least.

At £300 a pop £5,000 can dispose of 16 people who have really Censored you off, and still have change for a nice meal out with the Mrs. Think of all that stress you will no longer have, and you wouldn't have a Disco2 breaking down every 5 minutes. Tangiers Orange - gone, missing her
Replaced by Ewok what a mistake - now a happy Disco Sport owner

Laughing Laughing that escalated quickly Laughing

Apologies for the delay in replying - I don't seem to be getting the email notifications s.

Hadn't considered a D2 - will look into it.

Had fancied putting an Android Auto head unit in but the faff of all the adapters and then needing a new amp to keep the sub has kind of put me off. Unsure what other toys O have as an option.

Thanks again all. Learned to drive in 2011.

Failing getting rid of the in-laws, the boss, and the moron who won’t sell you a breakfast because it’s 2 minutes past 11, then how about upgrading to a HSE with more than enough toys?

The local arborist might put you through the wood chipper for a case of beer but you have to be frozen or it makes a mess of the machine. One way for reducing one's carbon footprint! Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!
