Retrofit - Paddle gear shift (flappy paddles)

I've not done this myself, and don't plan to, but the question has come up a couple of times and I wanted to share my research.

To break it down the paddle gear shift consists of a left and right paddle module and a loom to get the signals from the steering wheel to the car. How easy it is to do depends on model year. Post face lift is far, far easier.

PRE FACE LIFT

The basic principle is to make the car think you've pushed the gear selector up or down when in command shift 'S'

Its a bit of a frankenstein affair which involves using relays, maybe a bit of wireless switching and wiring directly into the gear selector

And for pre face lift FL2 there is a thread on fullfatrr
http://www.fullfatrr.com/forum/topic6133-75.html

POST FACE LIFT

Well everyone loves a video, from powerfulukltd, probably the most detailed process.

There is some useful information in this thread

The RRsport forum has a thread

And Disco3 has a couple

I'll expand on this if I find anything new

Hi Vannyđź‘Ť
In our cases post MY13 it should be plug and play as the paddles just plug into the steering wheel switch packs. Paddle shift then need to be enabled in the CCF.
When you doing it...... Laughing This could be interesting to watch.
I'm a little busy at the moment as you know..... Very Happy

I want to do it on my 2014 Metropolis. The actual fitting of the paddles looks easy but I have no idea how to affordably enable the paddle shift in the CCF, don’t fancy buying hundreds of pounds worth of tech kit just to do that one job in the CCF - does anyone know of someone in the UK that could do it once I’ve fitted the paddles?

On the Evoque auto, using the dashboard config settings menu's you can select to have the ability for manual gear changes (using flappy paddles) in sport or normal drive mode. Or you can select just to manually change when in sport.

In sport mode the gears will hold until the preset thresholds are reached and it changes or the driver shifts up/down, and in drive it reverts back to full auto after a short period of driving with no further gear changes.

Would the FL2, either pre or post facelift, have the ablility to do this as well ?

Erm, eBay looks like ÂŁ250 heated and ÂŁ150 not heated. Seems like a waste to put so much effort in and not have a heated one.

I'm not convinced I would get away with, I suspect the finance director might have something to say!

StuartC you are a terrible influence!

Flappy paddles, harness, back plate on there way to me for not a lot of money! I fancied getting a heated wheel, but given that the RRS and Disco4 have a splined shaft and the evoque/sport/Freel2 has a hex shaft, there really aren't many out there. Which I had bought one here when I had the chance.

Looks like i'm the guinea pig for post 13MY?

Unlikely in pre MY13, post maybe, not sure yet. I've already activated the field's associated with "paddle shifts" (there's more than one) and nothing activated in the command centre for "vehicle configuration" and tbh wasn't expecting it to as we've seen many times before that until hardware is detected on the CAN/LIN, features remain hidden, in this case the paddle shifts are a part of the LIN between the steering wheel module and BCM. Bit like DAB dissapearing when fault occurs. MY15

Parts have arrived, new rear steering wheel cowl with cutouts for paddles, this saves me doing any surgery on my current one, paddles and happy to say correct paddle wiring loom which was under question.
Only thing missing is the lug on the L359 steering wheel hub to attarch the paddle shift to but that won't stop me, more worries about releasing the AirBag which is always a Censored

Well I went for it as PowerfulUK had a set of parts on offer. Very good value, so I couldn't resist.

Releasing the air bag a Censored , you where NOT kidding. Some time with the Topix instructions and the powerfulUK you-tube videos and a bit of bending resulted in this;

And eventually this;

Note that to release the air bag connectors, lift the orange locking tabs then lift the connector out. Pretty common connector but it boggled my brain for a few minutes due to the shape.

With the wheel off the car (TORX 50, 40Nm for the bolt) then it was possible to strip down the wheel

As StuartC points out, there are no lugs in the magnesium alloy on the FL2, not too hard to over come, didn't even take any imagination. Ultimately I ended up with this;

Installed, and I have lights!

Haven't actually done the CCF change so at the moment i basically have bits of plastic with a pretty blue '+' and '-' sticking up behind the wheel. It got to cold and dark to start battling with SDD, which also needs some updates . . .

If nothing else, its nice to finally beat StuartC to an upgrade, though i suspect he's already got his fit and working by now Very Happy

Who is next?

Especially they're colour coding Rolling Eyes None them correspond but I've managed to decifer LR's mess, sound familiar Vanny!!!!!! Rolling Eyes
Yes the AirBag is a Censored . That's the hardest part of this job!
