Well, driving down the motorway yesterday, I went to accelerate to overtake while in 6th and felt a weird momentary dip in power as if something slipped, then it picked up again.

I'm assuming this is the first symptom of a slipping clutch. Which is just great seeing as it's a late 60 plate with 57k on it

That's what I had in my first FL2 (07 plate with about 90k) slips in 6th that became more frequent, and then slips in 5th as well.
it should still last a while longer though until the Xmas rush is over

I'm hoping it last a lot longer than Christmas! I've only just decided to keep it rather than getting something else and now wondering if I should get shot now. Of course the new used car could need a big repair too. Feck. Learned to drive in 2011.

My previous FL2 (TD4e) started this last year almost as soon as I'd bought it. I made it last by not using full power until May this year when I traded it for an SD4 HSE.

I will say that I took the old one on holiday across France and Spain and was concerned about the clutch slip. But over the long miles it seemed to improve. So much so that, for a while I could use full power on overtakes. I wondered if there was a build up of dust within the clutch and flywheel that got thrown out during the long driving days. Sad to say that it didn't last too long.  MY13 Santorini Black SD4 HSE

your FL2 is about 6 years old now.

it's always been the case with all my Landrovers that once they get to 5 years old, self destruct mode kicks in

OR..........it's the fact that these dual mass flywheel/clutch combinations never seem to last much beyond 60/70K miles. Doesn't matter what car they're in.

OR..........no-one these days seems to know what a hand brake is for and they slip the clutch holding the car on hills. MY13 Santorini Black SD4 HSE

sounds like bad news, thankfully in 40 years of driving I have only ever had 2 clutches replaced in earlier cars. The Freelander HSE I got in Dec has 159,000 on an 07 plate, the previous owner said the original clutch was still in!!

I am hoping it will last a while yet. . .

One of the reasons I went for an auto this time was the absence of a clutch, remember that it is not covered by the LR warranty whereas an autobox is. 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

The difference is that a clutch is defined as an item that wears out like brake pads and its lifetime depends on how you use it whereas a torque convertor is just a couple of chunks of metal that don't touch sloshing around in oil. 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto
5 x FL2 4 manual + 1 auto

because all the components of an auto box are self contained and generally cant be down to user failures, then its covered as a mechanical component where as the manual clutch and flywheel is classed are separate wear and tear items unless it can be proven its a genuine mechanical failure.

Plus in many peoples opinions the auto box is much better suited to both the TD4 and especially the SD4 (auto only)

of course, out of warranty, an auto gearbox can be a lot more expensive to fix than a worn clutch/flywheel.

From Chuckalicious description this does not sound like a slipping clutch to me. If the clutch had slipped there would have been a noticeable rise in revs. Also clutch slip usually shows itself in low gears first when the torque load is high eg when moving off. I could be wrong!

Both my manual TD4's developed clutch slip which started in 6th, and progressed down through the gears. I think it works that way, high gear to low, as its related to how the torque is applied through the transmission so its noticeable in the higher gears first.

and before people jump to the failures being my fault the first was at 90k and fitted with a tow bar by a previous owner. The second was due to a failure of the slave cylinder seals at 55k.... neither due to me riding the clutch or any other driver related reason (although I do have big heavy feet )

Correct, the engine and clutch sees a lower torque requirement when pulling away in the lower gears, that's why you have a gearbox. The converse is true if anyone has ever had to push start a car, you get the car rolling and then put it in top gear so that you can deliver more torque to the engine to turn it over. Think about it.

Interestingly I believe that the auto box always pulls away in 2nd unless you put it in command shift 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto
