Car supply chain post Brexit

Article in today's Financial Times about problems of sourcing car components after Brexit. Apparently the UK market is too small a scale for a lot of the suppliers to set up operations here.

While the supplier base has expanded in recent years, UK automakers still rely on the EU. “We have a huge dependency on Europe,” says Ralf Speth, chief executive of Jaguar Land Rover, Britain’s largest carmaker. “You simply can’t buy some components in the UK.”

is that because manufacturing in UK was basically thrown out the window by Bliar and Braun ?

No it's more than that, apparently it's more about economy of scale which increases unit costs for lower volumes if you source from the UK versus import tarrifs if you have to buy in stuff from the EU. Either way we get shafted.
There is another issue like how long it takes to build up a UK supplier base, why should the existing suppliers be interested in building low volume facilities in the UK, where are the skilled workers and integrating that lot into "Just In Time" assembly etc ? 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

yeh see what your saying - higher volume = lower unit cost.

However the down turn of UK manufacturing in the years of 'new labour' plays a major part in it IMO

Im fairly apolitical, in that I believe in the right person for the job, but those 2 muppets did more long term damage to this country for their personal gains than anybody else IMO

If they had invested more in the existing UK manufacturing industries, then the list of EU reliant components would be shorter.

Rog after the Thatcher years there was next to no existing UK manufacturing left to invest in. Even HP brown sauce went abroad and that has a picture of the den of thieves on the label. Pure Asset Stripping and Short Termisem. Yes things needed change but apprentice training stopped and now you have the Polish plumber in every UK town. FL2 MY10 TD4 GS traded in at 2 years

I have to agree with Bob that it was Thatcher who decimated manufacturing. I live in a town that still feels the effects 35 years later. I'm sure there will be differing views on whether she was right or wrong, but Brown and Blair had very little left to destroy by the time they came to power.

And don't forget that Brown single handedly dismantled private defined benefit pension schemes by taxing dividends from investments retrospectively which has had the effect of creating huge pension fund deficits. I hope Mr Corbyn doesn't get the chance to upstage him. 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

One of those go-around in circles but if you have no job do you really give a Censored about defined benefits anything. A Government is tasked in securing its borders first but after that it should be dong its best for all the inhabitants not a select few.

Having been associated with a tax expert (that means ex-wife) in 1979 the tax experts were calling for loop holes to be closed to stop money and assets being leached to placed like the Cayman Islands. Parliament could have done it then and never did and the whole bunch since have not, defined theft !

So we are now at the last of the big land grabs of our schools and the NHS, many local authority care homes have already gone and the assets (land ownership) moved offshore as the companies went into planned liquidation and asset stripped. Land and assets purchased from local money via your local town hall is methodically being stolen from under our noses.

Yes, what happens to JLR's new engine plant in Wolverhampton given that they will have to stop selling cars with IC engines in 2040? In practice this means that well before that date people will start choosing cars with electric drive so I wonder how many years it takes to recoup the £500m investment in that plant? That business plan might look a bit of a dud now. 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto
