What honest john or whatever he's called hasn't picked up on is that if you don't break the law you don't need to know what the penalties are. A bigger deterrent to me is that if I accumulate enough points I'll lose my licence and then be unable to get to my place of work. A 60 mile round trip on public transport doesn't bare thinking about!

The Goverment pick the easy way of making money. However, if you look at killed, serious injury cauasation statistics, speeding over the limit is pretty low down at around 5%.
Speed within the limit but too fast for the conditions is around 18% and lack of concentration about 45%, but then that is not so easy to make money on.

As for always staying within the limit. With the variation of limits that we get these days ,which often bear no relation to the actual type or conditions of the road and infreqency of repeater signs, it is not always as easy as it may sound. Remember there are never problems, just new challenges

Am I correct in saying this is just for England and Wales?

Also I don't really think a police officer has the right to ask you what you make? Such a thing would have to be done through the courts.

Since it only applies to ridiculously over the top speeding (over 100 on the motorway or over 50 in a 30 zone) I do not think it will bother many of us. More of a concern is being summonsed for doing 33 for a short time in a 30 zone. Silver 2009 HSE

This is an interesting example as Glenn, if a customer was to have come into a garage of old complaining the speedo was not accurate the stock answer was a 10% tolerance was allowable and it's been my firm view I would us that in my defence if needed. Mine certainly reads high. FL2 MY10 TD4 GS traded in at 2 years

more and more councils/police forces/insurance companies are now enforcing 0% tolerance on speeding. So 30mph = 30mph regardless of accuracy of a cars speedo.

More modern cars do display a very accurate speedo reading, older cars less accurate, however there is always going to be a measure of inaccuracy (tyre condition, wear/tear on speed related components such as sensors etc) and to have 0% tolerance is way too draconian.

Along with excessive parking costs, congestions charges, LEZ, diesel car charges in cities and so on....

How can any government or local council sit there and say its not an easy revenue generator to target car drivers.

And for those that say '' Well don't speed, its against the law and dangerous and I never speed'' please go back into your closet and be quiet. Any speed will kill or injure, (yes the higher the speed the worse it is) but the Germans have had unlimited recommended speed autobahns for decades with a lower accident level than ours.

its as much about driver discipline and ability and attitude as it is about speed....

rant over.... I think..... Rolling Eyes

I was told over the weekend that if you have a digital speedo display then if you go to France it is a legal requirement to change it to read kilometers. Anyone else heard this? 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

well that was why older vehicles with analogue dials showed MPH and KPH. But with digital it will only show either/or unless it is switched over manually.

I had 2 Astra GTE in the 1990's with the digital dashboards. (which were very accurate even back then!) One was a RHD and I could switch between MPH and KPH. The 2nd one was LHD and could only display KPH.

I doesn't make a h'porth of difference Bob. Most police forces use the ACPO guidelines for speeding which suggests prosecuting at 10% + 2 mph. They have already built in a tolerance for low reading speedos .A few years back they used to prosecute when you exceeded 10% +2 so they have clawed 1 mph back which no doubt gets them a few more £100 speed awareness course fees Whistle

Having said that if they want to prosecute at 31 they can. It's the emergence of 20mph everywhere around here that cheeses me off. You have to concentrate on the dial so hard (as a dip in the road can add 2mph ) that you aren't looking where you are going ! 2009 GS Auto Zermatt Silver - Sold June 21 after 10 years of ownership
