Phone Charging via USB Cigarette Lighter Issue

Hi All,

I don't know if this just how the Freelander 2 works (MY2013 SD4 XS) or if it is an actual problem but I have to unplug the USB cable from the USB cigarette lighter and then plug it back in, after I've started the engine, for the phone to charge (iPhone 6 but have tested on other phones with same result). If I didn't do that and just plugged the phone in, it would say it is charging but wouldn't actually charge (actually looses charge as though it wasn't plugged in). I have tried a whole array of different cigarette plugs and USB cables but all with the same result? So my question is, does this happen to other people or do I have a fault with the cigarette lighter ports please?

Look forward to your answers.

Many Thanks,

Dom

A fault I'd say. I have a tablet permanently plugged in to the cig lighter and it charges just fine as soon as ignition comes on.

Funny you should post this. I had the same problem with the wife's phone recently. She plugged her phone in to charge it up, half hour later still showing 5% removed it and plug it back in and it started charging. Never give it a second thought, just thought she not plugged it in right. MY13 HSE LUX Aintree Green

Are you using pukka USB adapters in your lighter socket? Some use the cheapo adapters sold with "vapers " I don't think they are that reliable. Make sure you have the proper adapter.

del1979 - I might see what Land Rover say about the issue then if you think it is a fault.
hinchy - Interesting that someone else has the same problem. May I ask what year your Freelander is please?
dunkley201 - I've got a decent Belkin and Griffin cigarette USB adapter both have the same issue no matter what cigarette port they go into. Never had an issue with the Griffin in the Freelander 1 previously.

If there aren't a certain voltage levels on the D+ and D- wires on the cable, the phone will only draw up to 0.5 Amps from that charger, thinking that it's a normal USB port. That is the normal maximum current that a normal USB port can supply. But that current, on some cases is not enough to sustain the phone AND to charge it.
So, in other words, you need a specific charger or you need to open the one you have and put there some resistive voltage dividers for the D+ and D- lines in order to instruct the phone that it can safely draw up to 2 Amps from the charger.

The cigarette charger I have is 2.1 Amps dual port. That is more than enough to charge an iPhone 6. Product listed here: https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00B1H...&psc=1

Are you saying that I need to strip apart the belkin cigarette charger or the cigarette plug built into the car please?

As Dom says re-plugging the phone after ignition on solves the issue, and that he's tried various phones etc, I've assumed that he isn't actually using the phone at the time of testing the charge, and that he's realised that you can see if the phone recognises a charge input from the "Battery" screen, or alternative app such as Ampere.

If that isn't the case, maybe worth investing in a decent cable too (ie Anker).

The phone is not being used for anything. Just sat in the centre cubby box trying to charge if I haven't unplugged and plugged back in the cable first. I will try out an app to see what charge is going to the phone before and after I plug the cable in again.

Does the phone charge from the USB in the cubby hole? Or doesn't the XS have that? MY13 Santorini Black SD4 HSE

My iPod Classic charges fine from that USB media port and never gets removed.

Alright, well, all I can say is that my cig lighter sockets come on and work whenever and as soon as I unlock the car. I know this because I've just been out to check. I run an extra bank of cig lighter sockets from the front one in the cubby hole and it's lit up as soon as I press the unlock button on the fob. And goes off as soon as I press lock. MY13 Santorini Black SD4 HSE

Yeah my cigarette lighter also lights up when you unlock the car so there is definitely power there and the phone would even acknowledge it was on power when plugged in without removing the cable first. It just doesn't increase the phones battery charge bizarrely.
