Towbar

Considering putting a towbar with electrics on FL2. Looking for advice on pros and cons and if any modification to the vehicle is needed.

Towbar

Fitting the metal is easy.
Sorting the electrics isn't, unless your car is 2013 onwards with Jaguar-Land Rover wiring.

Pre 2013 is Ford Canbus system, you can get dedicated plug in wiring. The wiring comes in under the nearside boot floor and plugs into bare unused sockets for the towing module. The boot fuse box then requires two normal extra fuses in spare slots and a special J case shallow slow blow fuse. Ebay by far the cheapest for this fuse at £2.24.

A trip to a Land Rover specialist with correct vehicle software can then switch on the three parts of the CCF coding needed to disable fog lights, provide 12v charging power and alter vehicle stability when something is hooked up.

Pros and cons

You have an excellent car parking too close deterrent at the rear being a pro.

Cons, you might have to cut a piece out of the rear bumper valance to accommodate the hitch depending upon which make you go for.

Witter make one that doesn't need a cut, but the paint finish is rubbish and rusts instantly when wet. They are pig ugly too !

Personally the Land Rover/Thule/Brink fixed hitch is my choice. I've had the same on both my FL2's. PFJones are doing these for £135 plus electrics at the moment. Land Rover will sell you the same one that has a LR part number on the box for the best bit of £300.

Electrics aren't a problem, I fit a towbar to my 2007 and used the usual 7 way bypass relay without any problems.

mjtemple, thank you for your information, that's very useful, I think I will opt for a tow bar design that does not require removal of rear bumper/adaptation of bumper.

there is no room to fit tow bar,as far as I could see anyway,without removing bumper,and believe me I like finding shortcuts!even if you can its a lot easier with it off.

You cant fit a thule/Land Rover without taking the bumper off. It mounts in place of the crash bar behind the bumper skin.
Ignore the template for the cut out, you can cut much tighter than their measurements. I cut two vertical and score horizontal and folded the section up into the bumper so its still attached.

It gives you the chance to clean the grime out from behind everything too.

When I came to transfer my Witter towbar to my current FL2 it was quite corroded in parts - powder coating cracked and rust underneath - . Was no problem though; I took all the bits down to a local metal chemical stripping firm who chucked them in a tank of something nasty for a few quid - came back next day all beautifully cleaned - ready for me to paint with Hammerite. Jules
