OIL LIGHT GOES ON WHEN ENGINE IS IDOL

I got my Freelander from a service and I just noticed that the oil indicator on my dashboard is going on when stationery and goes off when I drive off or rev the engine. Mechanic asked me to drop it off again to have a look but was wondering if anyone here might be familiar with this sort of thing.

Also, does anyone know how I can re-set the counter dial to read that the service and oil change was just done? Mechanic had no idea about it.

There is a problem when the oil filter is improperly seated and installed.
You could run out of oil pressure.
Check it as soon as possible!

Hi Alex, I forgot to mention that the oil filter wasnt changed during this service.

No idea.... I obviously made the wrong choice of mechanic and need to look for another one before the next service.

In the meantime Id appreciate any help I can get.

Acciola - A "service" is more than changing the oil. To keep your LR2 in top condition it should go to a garage who has at least some knowledge and preferably a Land Rover specialist. I presume there may be no Land Rover accredited dealer in Malta. I guess there is, however, given Malta's British history, at least a British car specialist. To avoid a disaster, get your car to someone who knows what they are doing as soon as possible!

OK... Please forgive me as I just spoke to my mechanic and made a mistake... It was the Diesel Filter he didnt change and NOT the Oil Filter... That was changed so now Im thinking that file alex_pescaru first posted could be very relevant.

Excuse me again if I caused any confusion.

Is the Return Valve that the MAHL document mentions in the silver metal section shown or the black plastic filter housing that you unscrew and end up holding in your hand ? It reads like its in the black plastic filter housing but when I changed my filter there was no return valve in it, the filter was a snap fit into the filter housing which had some play in it, so the filter could rattle back and forth but it was locked into the housing.

There was someone on here recently that had the oil light on after an oil change and the engine failed ! Jaguar x-type sport gone
Jaguar x-type 2.2d sport one of my best cars ever sadly gone
Freelander 2 GS auto 2008 most unreliable ever ! gladly gone
Freelander 2 GS manual 2013 only time will tell !

It's in the metal housing. On it's bottom.
When you start to unscrew the oil filter cover, the oil filter will come out together with the cover. As soon as the filter/cover ensemble will start to rise, the spring loaded valve from the bottom of the metal housing will start to rise/open following the rising filter/cover ensemble. In that moment, the oil inside the cavity will flow back through the opened valve on the sump and when you'll detach the cover with the oil filter you'll find an empty cavity, without oil.

Ok thanks for that, so would I be right in thinking this black circular part is the return valve and if you get your fingers on it you should be able to compress it slightly? If it need changing is just a case of pulling it off and slotting a new one back, or would the whole body have to come off? (wouldn't fancy doing that one).
