Another Retro Fit Sat Nav - Garmin 760T

Hello. After reading this forum for a year....here is my first post Very Happy

I wanted to find a replacement for my TomTom and ideally find something that would fit in the "cubby hole". After much research on these forums and the internet, I bought a Garmin 760T. I thought I would have to remove it for security reasons when leaving the car, as I could not see how it would fit in the hole, and still get to the power switch etc.

However, once I purchased it, and saw that it did not have to be attached to the "sucker", or powered on by the top switch I found a way to retro fit it.

Basically I padded the hole with high density foam, tapped ignition live power from behind the handbrake (there is a connector there if you take out the hear headphone sockets) and also wired in the speaker output into the Aux on the Stereo. On top of that I wired in a speaker on top of the dash, and the traffic cable tied behind the glovebox. The surround was made out of plastic card from a model shop, and best of all, when you remove the mat from within the "cubby hole" there is a hole at the back that you can pass cables through.......I did not drill a single hole in my pride and joy!

And hey presto!

The best thing is when you start the car it starts up automatically (and I also changed the start up splash screen to a Land Rover logo Very Happy ) and when you eject the key it turns off (and you can override and keep it on if you want to).

With the custom POI's and all the extra's, this was the best thing I ever did (once I had the courage to take the dashboard apart!)

Sure the screen is a little smaller than the factory fit one, but mine is more flexible with the POI's and represents about a £1500 saving.

Philip

I really like that! however the GPS is a bit small. Can you get a bigger Garmin? or is that the biggest?

I'm looking at fitting a Sony Sat-Nav as it looks like an almost exact match for the cubby hole at 145 x 87mm footprint! Thumbs Up

I did look at the Sony, but could not see how it would fit operationally taking cable connections into account. Also, the chap I spoke to in Halfords (yes, I know Rolling Eyes ) did say to me that the software in the Sony was very slow compared to Garmin, and at the end of the day, Garmin are a big player in this market.

I suggest you do what I did, and take the tape measure into Halfords.......and then go to Amazon and buy it for almost £50 cheaper! Rolling with laughter

with your wiring into the speakers does that now mean the audio from the garmin is played through the cars speaker system? only when you swithc it to Aux? does that now mean you can connect an ipod to play through you aux? 2008 FL2 HSE i6 Stornoway Grey Ebony Premium Pack Sunroof Indash Navman Illegal Window Tint Smile

That is correct. Switch to Aux and it comes through all the Speakers in the car.

Yes you can still use AUX at the same time for an iPod, but the sound will be "mixed"
