MY14 steering wheel fit?

Got myself a heated leather MY14 steering wheel.
Wasn't planning on the expense of the required clock spring for the heated element to work.
But if I did, would this need activated?

Also, I have assumed that this new wheel would be just a straight swap with my existing MY11 wheel and that all functions currently available will work ok with the new wheel.
But is this correct? FL2 now gone and have a couple of items left for sale:-

Brodit active iPhone holder + Brodit dash clip,
Bluetooth Music Streaming Module.

I believe it is correct, I previously thought that it would need activating, however, it turns out that all that is needed is the spring and, I think, a feed.
All the temp regulator etc are built into the wheel.
I have a heated wheel and it is very good indeed. Thumbs Up

Have a dig around, maybe over on D4 too, there is a write up somewhere.

Thanks Paul, but without the heated part, would the all the controls on the new wheel work as they do on my current wheel.

As I'm Scottish, a) I'm used to cold, b) I like keeping my pennies.

Not sure on the controls as the MY14 cars have a different electrical system.
Someone will clarify I am sure.

A) I'm not a southern softie
B) I have no pennies to keep Laughing

You don't need it activated and there is or was in later models, an electrical connector wrapped in grey foam behind the Clockspring top.

A heated Clockspring has a single power connector which connects up to this electrical connector. The Clockspring has another connector which connects up to the heated steering wheel switch.

As it's hardwired and is a simple power lead, then you don't need it enabelled, it will work straight off.

The steering wheel is the cheap bit really. The expensive bit is the Clockspring. Expect to pay £150 plus if you can find a second hand one, never seen one for a Freelander. A dealer will charge about £250.

Will all your bits work without the heated Clockspring and connector,. Yes, if the wheel and controls are a direct replacement. I am not sure if you fit a new style controls to replace an old one.

Sort of annoyed, when I chopped in my FL, I left the heated wheel and Clockspring in it. I've got an ordinary Napa one with controls sitting in my garage that I will have to flog. Not get quite so much for it.

Hey ho, typical, just one of these thing I forgot to do. Rolling Eyes

Note to self, must sell on the stuff I did remember to remove. Whistle it's just sitting in the garage collecting dust.

I note from your profile that you have a MY2011 FL2.
If this is correct then you will not be able under any circumstances retro fit a heated steering wheel to your vehicle.

When I have the time I will post a full and detailed account as to why technically it is not possible to retro fit a HSW to any FL2 other than, the model years in which the HSW was available as a factory fit option.

Thanks for that, after a lot of forum reading I was beginning to draw a similar conclusion.
Wasn't overly concerned about getting the heated bit to work, switches/ buttons were my main concern
But my understanding so far was:
I'd need the relevant clock spring and a connector & feed wire for the heated bit.
I may have to change the counter weights and cowl .....?
To get the switches to work I'd need to invest in some PCBs, at a rough cost of £200 (available for the D4 wheel to D3 conversion), but not checked yet if ok for FL2.

Bloody minefield, and I've already committed to buy the wheel Big Cry
And really not worth the hassle & cost.

Could this wheel be of interest to MY14 owners who don't have leather or heating?
Or us is it just £s in the bin! Sad

Your comments are & would be much appreciated athelstan Thumbs Up FL2 now gone and have a couple of items left for sale:-

Between differing model years, the switches will present problems, although there are work arounds. See the Disco site. My one was really just a replacement SW with heat so I didn't have the difficulties.

The heated element however is straightforward even between model years. It only needs a power and earth source. There are plenty of retrofits on the Disco site that have even avoided a new clock spring and having a spare power plug.

Not so re the FL2.
I will open a new thread to explain why shortly.
