Heated steering wheel

Just bagged my self a heated steering wheel, from the bay. Just need the car to fit it to.

Is it as simple as a straight swap, you're assuming the wiring and relays are in place?
I have it, it's seen as a gimmick by some but believe me it works well Thumbs Up

Yes and No.
Having thoroughly investigated this for her Ladyship's MY2010 FL2 with a couple of official LR garages (actually her FL2 was in the workshop of one of these attempting to have the job done) and an independent LR specialist they all concluded that despite a list of new parts required in addition to obviously the new heated steering wheel ( costing circa £800) that it is not possible to do this upgrade unless you are an owner of a MY2013 or MY2014.

However, if someone proves that the above esteemed LR "experts" are wrong and you have had this upgrade installed and up and running then do please let me know pronto. Thanks.

Hi Athelstan
I believe the OP has a new SE Tech on order which simplifies things as it will be the same electrical subsystem rather than retro fit onto the original.
The D4 boys have done the mod, requiring a new 'clock spring' to be fitted and the wheel 'activated' in the software.
Please post your results though, as many will be interested.

LR NUT is spot on i will be collecting my MY2015 on 6th september. If its like other run out models for other manufactures it will be hit and miss what looms are used as they clear stock. Hopefully it will have the gubbins for rear view camera too as i intend to install the OEM one for the dynamic lines and hitch assist etc, so will need steering angle sensor which is slso used by xenon AFS. Hopefully it will be similar to the evoque with wheel and slip ring. No software required. Will let you know once its done though. Along with all the other mods of course. Lots to keep me busy including a one off rear seat entertainment package.

Yep as I stated - it is not a problem with the later model years '13 & '14.

With previous MY's I have been told by the LR trained techies that there exists a "physical size" problem between the older clock spring housing (rotary coupler) and the latest (MY'13 onwards) housing. Of course not being an auto mechanic myself I am reliant upon quality expert input and therefore could possibly have been the victim of disinformation from numerous "know-all's" that in reality know nothing on this particular subject. Would not be the first time re specialist technical matters relating to modifying the FL2 from standard spec. And, even our resident factory expert on record on this forum - "Mike@LandRover" - stone walled Athelstan on this very subject. What has never been clarified to me is the question of: "can the older housing be physically modified to accommodate the new rotary coupler?"

If the D4 chaps have done this to older model years then I'd welcome that data in detail because it is my understanding (again this could also have been disinformation) that both the FL2 and D4 share the same rotary coupler housing in like for like model years. So please forward the details of how this has been done - and importantly - by whose experienced hand, for I have a job for them. Her Ladyship dislikes driving wearing gloves in these very cold Swiss mountains during winter nights out on emergency calls.

Back to the FL2.
For those wishing to do the upgrade to a heated steering wheel re MY's '07 to '12 these are the upgrade parts identified by LR trained personnel to do the job - if it can be done!

LR041045 - Heated Steering Wheel
LR050910 - RH Switches (Note: I have been advised that LR041045 does not come supplied with the RH n LH panel switches)
LR050956 - LH Switches
LR039869 - Wheel Heating Module
LR050898 - Wire
LR024653 - Rotary Coupler
Plus labour for installation of the hardware & for installation of new software drivers to update the CCF.

Trust that lot helps.

Okay - you'll be the one English yeoman - your nuts will be frozen together when you're woken at 3am on a December night at minus 30°C having been called out on an emergency to a patient that needs your urgent help in our Swiss mountains.

But hang on I'll just have to wait and waste about 10 precious minutes for the cabin to warm upon engine tickover as I can't touch the steering wheel because it too is ice cold. Okay put some gloves on - but even cosy Seal Skins slip n slide around the steering wheel in those temps. And that's no use with deep frozen snow on the road down the mountain out of the village around the hairpins. With that lack of control the Doctor easily becomes a casualty.

A heated steering wheel could save a life.

The heated steering wheel is a must have for me... even if it is just for comfort. I used to be critical of people who need all of the creature comforts like a heated wheel, but after I ordered my 2013 Evoque with one it has followed with my to a 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee EcoDiesel and now my 2015 LR2.

I've done a retro heated steering wheel. Just need a heated s/wheel obviously, complete with steering wheel switch and a new clock spring.

You do not need it activated! It's a hardware upgrade. You do not need to tell the system it's fitted.

In essence you remove old s/wheel, take the plastics surrounding it off, fish for the redundant power connector. Then put new clock spring on, connect it up to the power connector, new s/wheel on and that's it. The light on the new switch lights up when it's on and it cuts off after about 15 mins.

The clock spring is expensive for what it is. I have read on the Disco site that there is a sucessful workaround this and taking the power to heat it from a positive wire, so it will work in any MY car. Just do a search on "heated steering wheel" on that site.

It's not a cheap upgrade, about £500 or thereabouts. The s/wheel gets warm, without getting hot.

Would I do it again? Maybe, but it wouldn't be high up on my list of priorities.
