I thought that members might be interested to see this, we have a 2010 FL2 with 51k miles. We had a vibration at various speeds and eventually I discovered that the inner CV joint on the front drivers side drive shaft had a lot of play in it (but not always apparent with the wheel on the ground) . On careful examination I found that the large metal band holding the boot in place had at some time been replaced by a cable tie which was loose, the smaller one was still in place. When we took it apart it was clear that water had got inside and turned the grease to a sort of emulsion. The half shaft has to replaced as a single unit (£305) and a local indy did the whole job for £400. The CV boot looked in good condition and the car has done 17k miles since its first MOT in April 2013 when the boot would probably have been checked first. I can only assume that the metal band came off somehow and that the cable tie wasn't put on tight enough allowing water to get inside the joint. Be warned...

Looking at the colour of that grease I'd say that water had got in and had caused something (needle rollers?) to rust and disintegrate. Past: FL2 TD4 HSE Auto
