I don't think it would suit your silver car Taz, but that's my opinion.

So, I have a small supply of black plastidip ! but apperently it'll be back in stock in April sometime.

As for the twin pipes, yes I've stuck the genuine landrover 3.2 back box on the vehicle. There is a difference in the sound but only and I would imagine that if you were running a good air filter along with some type of tunning, it does make a difference.

And only cost £150 and took 30mins to fit on my drive.

I've got some better stainless steel double wall weld on tips coming and I'll post some pics when there fitted.

Rob

I think the black rear strip looks very good too, might try that on my silver car where it will look much better, side vents in black would benefit too, sort of a mid life makeover just under 50k on it now.

Taz, I'd go gunmetal instead of black. you can plastidip in any colour in reality but gunmetal is a off the shelf option.

Hmm, that's certainly a possibility, I wonder how close to the door handle colour would that be?
Just thinking it may clash if not quite right, but then again could the door handles be done or would it simply wear off?

Can you post how you prep the surfaces, what do you use specifically etc?

Cheers for a great thread too Robert Thumbs Up

right then, so Plastidipping is really easy. I'm am terrible at painting and even I can do this.

So prep, all you need to do is make sure all polish and tar etc is removed from the area you want to paint. You can buy specific products at halfords but sugar soap, surgical spirits and even petrol do the trick (careful not to damage paintwork or finish). You definately don't sand anything down prior to spraying and no need for primers.

Once you've cleaned the area, mask it off roughly. Do not mask right up to the edge of what you are painting, leave atleast 1cm or more gap. The Plastdip naturally cut's itself at joins, gaps or edges as you peel the excess away. If you painting outside I'd suggest covering all surrounding areas as you'll find you have a thin layer of rubber if you don't. However if you do, it easily wipes off.

You're now ready to paint. Give the spray can a good old shake and do a quick test spray to check the nozzle isn't blocked. Then use smooth side to side spraying motions to spray a first coat. I found that spraying from anywhere from 30cm seems to work well.

You'll just need to apply thin coats. If you're too close it will run (don't worry about this), and if your too far away it'll take loads of coats and you'll waste plenty of paint. Leave about 20-30mins for the paint to dry.

Your first coat will look awful and so will your second and third coat probably.

It will take 4-5 coats for the paint to build up a proper coating, but if in doubt add a further coat.

Don't be put off with how it looks intially as it drys smoothly almost hiding over spray and any runs. If you do get any over spray or issues, let it dry and spray over it. If you've done something horribly wrong (which is hard), just let it dry and simply peel or rub it off).

Once your happy with the coverage and finish, allow to dry for 40 - 60mins. Then remove the masking. As you remove the masking tape you'll see the paint start to peel off the unwanted area's.

Any unwanted paint left, simply pick at it with your finger nail then peel back. Small area's like inbetween the lettering on the bonnet, I used a toothpick to remove the paint.

And it's a simple as that.

Best of all, if you don't like it......just peel it all off.

If you want it to have a gloss or metalic look you can buy additional sprays for this. You can also make your own colours / tints.

Not a great write up and no photo's of the process, but hope it helps.

I may paint my debadged 'SD4' letter later and take some pics / video of the process.

Rob

If I were thinking of applying this I'd be concerned about the ease with which it seems to come off! I know it's supposed to be durable, but I think I'd want to see some real, end-user cars after four or five years of day-to-day use (including jet-washing, car washes, heavy rain, etc) before trusting it. Particularly as the name suggests it's really supposed to be applied by dipping, rather than spraying!

I agree with you. if you're looking for a permanent solution then this isn't it.

However for 12 months as a non permanent finish I think I it's perfect...... and very cheap.

Plus it's just a bit of fun in reality.
