It was on the radio today that the Bentley that the Queen travelled to church in on Sunday took 7 attempts to start after the church service. It also said the queens car doesnt have a license plate. Does the queen cars not need tax and insurance also? I don't know if it has changed but when I was working for the government our pool cars carried no tax or insurance. The government "self insured" itself. John

I believe anyone can self-insure. All you have to do is deposit an appropriate number of millions (I don't know how many, but it's a lot!) in an appropriate escrow account...

If the Italian lire comes back, I'll deposit millions(about £2.50) and start an insurance company.

Think it through....It's called crown immunity - otherwise the Monarch would end up prosecuting themselves...in whose name are the Laws of this land created?

In years gone by wider parts of the public sector had Crown Immunity...the NHS for example ....that was removed in the 80s I think...so hence the HSE, planning authorities, food hygiene and yes car tax suddenly applied to the old Crown premises/vehicles.

It has been said that London Buses are insured the same.

I thought Crown Immunity was the legislation which made them exempt from prosecution under H&S regulations and probably other things. The MOD certainly operated on that principle until it was removed.

It may be Crown Indemnity - the government does not insure its vehicles because it has enough money to pay for any claims directly (it self-indemnifies). MOD operates this as does, I believe, the Post Office.
