Anyone installed a dash cam ?

Hi guys,

Thinking about installing a front & rear dash cam.

I had an accident a few weeks ago where a HGV merged into my lane, hitting my drivers side rear quarter.

It's been fixed now & going through the insurance, but the guy is claiming that it was me who switched lanes & hit him !!!!

Furious isnt the word right now, so looking at installing some dash cams to make sure this doesn't happen again.

Just wondered if anyone had done it & could recommend a camera kit & if the wires can be hidden away ?

Cheers

Chris

I saw this iPhone app reviewed on TV the other day, which turns the phone into a dash cam.

The Blackvue is probably the ultimate dash cam for accident recording, but it's expensive - going on £300. It doesn't have a screen, but as far as I'm concerned that's an advantage as it keeps is small.

I've been looking around for something cheaper, but whilst I'm not bothered about losing the GPS I would like to keep the small screen-less size. There's one on Amazon which sounds OK, and does have GPS
http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B007TT6...d_i=468294
but I haven't actually seen or used it. Anyone?

If you want a screen the Smartcam 2 sounds OK
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/SmartCam-2-HD-Ca...8232249%26

I'm still trying to make my mind up. N.B. Both of the above have suction mounts rather than stick-on. I've seen reports elsewhere of these falling off the screen and triggering the alarm in parked cars!

For me, smartphone apps are never going to be the solution. Yes, they work well enough. But having to put the phone in the screen every time, and select the app, and start recording, is just too much hassle. I know I would soon stop bothering for short trips, and it wouldn't be there when I needed it!

I use one of the £30 cheap ones. Small, own drop down screen, good image and I have it right up with the rear view mirror so it is hardly noticeable. Ok, it has no GPS, it's not up there with the blackvue or roadhawk, but lets be honest, it records what happens as it happens. It starts as I start the car, and stops when I switch the engine off (powered by the front aux socket). Takes videos in 5 minute files with time and date stamp. The USB lead is completely hidden running round roof lining edge then down inside the inner rubber edging to just below the seat controls and under my seat to socket.

Cheers for the replies guys.

As above, I'm after something I can install & forget about unless I need to pull any video off it.

Needs to be small enough not to be seen (so prefer no screen), as I'd want to leave it in the car 24/7 without fearing someone would smash my window to steal it.

I'd also need to find a way of hardwiring it in with no visible wiring.

Phone apps are not wide angled enough, would need mounting each journey & would probably eat my battery !!

I reckon upto £70 is a sensible figure, loads of them about, plus Chinese clones on the likes of eBay, but I'm a little lost o reviews etc & would prefer a recommendation Wink

There are several threads on here which address this in the context of satnavs - a search should find plenty of information. Basically you want an ignition-switched supply, and you can get that from an unused fuse in the passenger footwell fusebox, using a take-off socket which you plug in to the fusebox and which provides you with a fused supply. (This saves wiring actually in to the fusebox.) Just connect a socket to the supply, tuck away all the wiring, and there you are. Finding an earthing point can be the hardest part, but there are a few bolts you can use if you have the right tools to loosen them.

This was given to me at Christmas. It is a "Prestigio Road Runner HD1" Works fine once you get used to the menu system. (there is a useful video on youtube) Although once set up you do not need to touch it as it switches on and off with ignition.

Try this link: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Prestigio-Road-Run...amp;sr=8-1 Presently £79.95 although I have seen it cheaper elsewhere. Needs SD card up to 32GB. 10MY (Sept 09) TD4 HSE Auto in Stornoway Grey (Now Gone)

There seems to be some decent prices for in-car DVR's.
If you don't want GPS speed etc.you can get one for £20+.
Might try one and report back

Type of view from roadhawk
complete with voice recorder, ( picks up the tick from the indicators, very handy when you need to prove you were indicating ) records speed time-date location and XYZ axis g force.

sits neatly over the top of the mirror
