help with puddle lights

Hi everyone,
This might seem like a bit of a stupid question but can anyone explain when puddle lights operate and dont operate i.e do the main lights have to be on? does the engine need to be running? do the doors need to be open etc
I only got my fl2 2 weeks ago and never had these before and i want to make sure they are operating correctly,

England 2008 Freelander 2 TD4 HSE Auto Stornoway Grey

When you unlock the car and the wing mirrors unfold the door mirror lights should be on - they stay on for about 1 minute +/-. When you open the doors (either front) the door puddle lights should come on. Thumbs Up

Anyone know if they can be set to come on when you get out of the car? that would be almost more useful than before you get In!
