Sat Nav Recommendations

My Dad has been on about getting a Sat Nav for Christmas so my Mum asked me to gather some info about them.

He doesn't want anything too fancy and expensive but ideally wants it to be easy to program and use. Clarity would be nice too rather than some difficult and tiny maps and images.

Can I ask what your recommendations are please? LL.B (Hons) - University of Derby

I believe this to be quite cheap, not too fancy, simple to use and easy to store away from prying eyes. Clarity's not bad either

They are brilliant, the battery life is impressive too!

England 2007 Freelander 2 TD4 SE Auto Baltic Blue

Hi Doc, can't recommend TomTom highly enough, I have 2 both TomTom One V2 & V3, clarity is brilliant and much easier to programme than the factory one in my Freelander.

can't comment on Navman but just been to Australia and was using a Garmin and it wasn't a patch on my TomTom.

Hope this helps and Halfrauds usually have deals on pre Christmas. Gone, 2007 TD4 SE Auto Baltic blue, clear side repeaters, full sized alloy spare.

Can easily add loads of different POI's in various colours depending on your choice of crayons, updates inexpensive and no ring mark on left on the screen to attract any Lowlife, good choice Thumbs Up

Oh, go on then, if you want some proper advice, can I suggest going for the most basic 5" screen TomTom (XXL) you can get your hands on:

From £100 via this site.

I use a Garmin Nuvi 250W.
Has worked flawlessly in the UK and France, good screen size and very easy to program.
Couldn't comment on a Tom Tom as I have never used them but don't like the look of them anyway hence the reason I went for the Garmin. ______________________

Interesting, thanks. There are certainly loads of Christmas deals being thrown around so I will see what's doing.

I work in Derby approx 10 mins walk from Westfield Centre. It should be fun dealing with the hordes of Christmas shoppers! Laughing LL.B (Hons) - University of Derby

I'm another fan of TomTom having had a few of them over the years.

They seem to specialise in keeping the most up to date - their HD services are very good (free for first year usually) especially the HD Traffic - it uses TMC like the competitors but has the edge in that it also uses new technology on the movements of mobile phones to track traffic flow

I find them easy to use.

But I've heard that you should avoid the latest generation 1000 series

I'm on my 6th TomTom (TomTom Go 700, 900, 910, 920, 940 and, now, a 1005) and, while none of them have been perfect, the 1005 is the clearest and easiest to use, whilst having the best windscreen mounting and it is one of the most reliable. I'd be happy to recommend a 1000 series and I shall be sticking with my 1005 now.

Incidentally, don't buy a TomTom for the hands free phone facility; with the honourable exception of the 920, the sound quality is pathetic!

I can vouch for Tom Tom also... Although I rely on Landrover now.

Never had a problem, clear, easy to use and has got me around uk and Europe effortlessly

I have done the bulk of my Christmas shopping online but there are some items which require viewing so I will have to brave the crowds LL.B (Hons) - University of Derby

Have they solved the updating problems with the 1000 series now? When they first came out you couldn't update the speed cameras etc and had no fuel pricing either

United Kingdom 2010 Freelander 2 TD4 HSE Auto Rimini Red

No problem updating speed cams or fuel prices on my OEM Freelander 2.......
Slight problem with it wanting me to leave the M6 at one junction only to return to the M6 after the roundabout....
Nice to have it but not asa very expensive extra, much better to choose a top of the range Tom Tom...... IMHO
Is the hard drive version on RRS etc any better? JT Upgraded to an ex demo, 7 mth old, Rimini Red/Ebony Napoli Auto HSE on 28th Jan 2011, added roof rails, mudflaps and side strips.
Gone - A great 57 Plate, Auto SE, Bought Feb 2009, Roof Rails and Mudflaps added on purchase. Blue colour, anything but drug dealer black.....
