But I've heard that you should avoid the latest generation 1000 series

I'm on my 6th TomTom (TomTom Go 700, 900, 910, 920, 940 and, now, a 1005) and, while none of them have been perfect, the 1005 is the clearest and easiest to use, whilst having the best windscreen mounting and it is one of the most reliable. I'd be happy to recommend a 1000 series and I shall be sticking with my 1005 now.

Incidentally, don't buy a TomTom for the hands free phone facility; with the honourable exception of the 920, the sound quality is pathetic!

Have they solved the updating problems with the 1000 series now? When they first came out you couldn't update the speed cameras etc and had no fuel pricing either

Updating is largely sorted, though it's still not perfect and they've discontinued the fuel pricing on the 1000's.

So those who like the Tom Tom satnavs how do you fit them:

a) in the cubby - looking just like a factory fit
b) stuck on the windscreen
c) wife holds it in the passenger seat (up-side-down!)

I only ask as there are loads of threads about fitting Garmin into the cubby on the dash - but no Garmin fans seem to have stepped forward in this thread..... Confused 2002 Honda VFR800

I have a wide screen garmin, it was easily wedged in the hole as the hole gets smaller as it gets deeper, no fittings etc needed,on trips longer than the battery life just trail the recharger over the radio no big deal. At work

I would definatly avoid the suction pad on the window, at a hotel 3 or 4 cars were broken into all had the visible suction marks, whereas the ones without the marks were left alone Evil or Very Mad

Ive used a Tom Tom with no issues

When I used the TomTom I fitted a Brodit Proclip to the dash, usually fits in the joint between 2 panels such as over 1 of the air vents which means they are non damaging, no drilling etc then I used a model specific holder for the TomTom which screwed to the Proclip, I used to get them from DSL Developments, can't put a link on here as I am using an iPad. Gone, 2007 TD4 SE Auto Baltic blue, clear side repeaters, full sized alloy spare.

Definitely Thumbs Up for the Tom Tom. I have a TT Go Live 740 I use regularly when driving HGVs. It has IQ Routes and Live update. Routing is really good when traffic hold ups arise. Just have to be mindful of low bridges and 7.5 ton limits!!! Meanwhile, in my Freelander, I have to put up with the built-in crap-nav - which seems to have a (very small) mind of its own! I already have the standard factory sat nav, but I don't use it as it's completely hopeless!

The Tom Tom goes on the windscreen where it's much easier to read without having to take my eyes off the road ahead. I wouldn't put it where the standard unit is for this very reason....

I use a Garmin Nuvi 250W.
Has worked flawlessly in the UK and France, good screen size and very easy to program.
Couldn't comment on a Tom Tom as I have never used them but don't like the look of them anyway hence the reason I went for the Garmin.

When I bought my Garmin Nuvi 200 or something for £80 off of the shop known as Amazon, I spent ages reading reviews. You could find just as many people slagging off / praising Garmin over Tom Tom and vice versa as to make reading the reviews a pointless exercise. Just buy the cheapest Garmin you can get, mine's been excellent and easy to use. No point spending loads on any extras as after 18 months all the maps will be out of date anyway, as mine keeps telling me every time I turn it on. Hope that review helps!

Depends which car I am in - in the FL2 - on the windscreen (buy carry an e cloth to get rid of ring on windscreen)
if in Nissan Note then that has a dash top cubby hole that I've fitted one of the mounting discs to so it fit in that.

I agree.

I use something like this.

A weighted base which sits on top of the dash and can be easily picked up and put in the glove box or transferred to another car.

I am also looking for a sat nav to fit the gaping hole in the dash...I have come to the conclusion that the Garmin 1490t is a good choice as it is a great fit. I am tempted to have one hard wired via the under glove compartment fuse box. A final trim is required to add the finishing touch making it look factory fitted, this trim is difficult to come by so I am in the process of sourcing a plastics firm that will make one. Halfords fit and supply the sat nav for £200!!
