Absolutely - which is why I said I read it online - as a web page.

Seriously, it's great to be able to search it electronically.

Agreed, an electronic copy is very useful and I have a downloaded PDF copy on all my PC's, but when away from home off roading in the mountains I never have an electronic version to browse. So if the occasion should arise its good to have that old fashioned non environmentally friendly alternative at hand Thumbs Up 2007 Freelander 2 HSE TD4 Manual with Premium Pack & Moonroof.
Stornoway Grey with Ebony Black Pleather, Clear Indicators, Body Side Mouldings etc.

I've had the same problem. It happened about twice but never seemed to cause any issues and went away after a few mins of driving.

My initial thought was that the steering wheel might have been turned before ignition. Then I checked near the pedals where you can see the steering column and noticed the floor mat was pressed up against it (the edge of it being cut up a bit). Whether these two things were the cause of it I don't know. I've never had the problem since.

STEERING COLUMN LOCK
The vehicle has an electronic steering column
lock that is deactivated when the remote
control is inserted in the docking port.
Note: It may be necessary to rotate the steering
wheel slightly to release the locking
mechanism. If the steering column lock does
not disengage the engine will not start and
STEERING COLUMN LOCKED will be displayed
in the message centre.

Handbook page 12.

Sad, I know, but I really did read the on-line version of the Owner's Handbook whilst waiting to take delivery of our Freelander.

Bill

Well, if I understand correctly what it says here, it shouldnt be possible to drive the car, or turn it around, or do anything. The engine certainly started.

Well, anyway -had "my" check-up today. AND there will be a warranty repair. If you get this message, IT IS A DANGER-SIGN, and you must have your car served.

As I am going to the mountains for my winter-vacation next week, I asked the mechanic if the car was safe to drive. He hesitated, but said he felt quite certain it would be OK. -And if not, I should call Land Rover Road Assistance, and they would take the car piggyback. Reassuring!
Meanwhile they will order the needed parts (new steering column, I believe), so in the beginning of March I can drive safely again. Hopefully.

Huang, if you have had the same message, you MUST have your car looked at. 2008 Freelander 2 HSE TD4 Automatic, Caspian Blue, Alpaca, Moon roof, Exclusive pack.

STEERING COLUMN LOCKED – this appeared whilst I was driving. Not sure if it had been on since I started the journey. When I arrived at work I did the re-boot thing and it disappeared.

I was just going to ignore it until a quick search on the forum and found this thread. Looks like I will be speaking to the service department on Monday.

What I don’t understand is it wasn’t locked as I was driving Shocked ????? A Land Rover owner since 1988

Exactly the same thing happened on my friend's BMW a couple of months back and, yes, a new steering column was required. In my view, it is another example of how manufacturers have over-complicated modern cars with unecessary gadgets (TPWS, electronic handbrakes etc etc ) to keep you dependent on them - no problem when the car is in warrantee but a TOTAL and expensive nightmare afterwards !! Maybe i'm just getting old !! Rolling with laughter

There is a Technical Bulletin that covers this situation.
LTB00290
Subject/Concern: Steering Column Locked Message Appears
VIN-range: H113897 Onwards
Summary:
The Central Junction Box (CJB) periodically checks the status of steering column lock by polling the instrument cluster. On occasions, the instrument cluster does not respond appropriately and this may lead to the erroneous message Steering Column Locked being displayed even though the steering column is unlocked and functioning normally.
Cause: Software within the Instrument Pack

Well this has started to show on our freelander and its due for a service this week so will tell dealer about this and the LTB number cheers Thumbs Up Another thing tho, SWMBO says that nearly every time she starts it says HDC Not available, Can't remember what it says exactly but you will know what I mean, but I know it can because of low battery voltage but we had a new battery fitted last year (and it still showed) and it does it now when weather is warm. Any pointers?
