Edumicate me please

I frequently see people posting that they have a "57 plate vehicle" or something of the like. I tried doing a search on the net regarding this. From what I gather, it basically refers to the year of registration.

What I don't understand is why one would use this as a reference v.s. simply stating that you have a specific year of vehicle (i.e. "I have a 2010" or "I have a '10")?

Can you explain this to a complete dolt? Whistle

It's always been the case in the UK for people to refer to the age of a car by the registration. Before the current bi yearly change twin number method, we used to have letters to identify the year of registration which was from August to August. For instance my very first car had a P at the end of the registration plate. Even now when I mention it it will be referred to as a P reg Vauxhall Viva. I think that was 1976 Confused , but I'm not 100% sure.

Funny really I've never thought of it as weird, until now. Confused For a free country, it does seem pretty expensive these days.
