My first '57 was a Silver Defender 90 seen early Saturday afternoon (1 Sept) on my way home from North Wales Land Rover Experience. Later in the same journey the second '57 was a Stornoway Grey FL2 SE, it passed me on the eastbound M56, it was travelling at least 85 mph, so much for running in. |

Short answer = a vehicle first registered in the UK on or after 1st September 2007. Long answer: Unlike many countries, the number plate on vehicles in the UK has nothing to do with annual road tax. Road tax is displayed on the windscreen on a "tax disk", which is renewed either annually or 6-monthly. The vehicle registration and the number plate is is displayed on is issued for the life of the vehicle, so it stays with the vehicle even if you sell it. Since 2001, UK number plates have been made up of two letters (showing the area in the UK where the vehicle was registered), followed by 2 numbers (showing the year it was first registered) followed by a random 3 letters, such as MT07 NFX. The numbers representing the age of the vehicle show which 6-month period it was first registered in, these 6-month periods start 1st September and 1st April. A vehicle with a "02" number will have been first registered between April and August 2002, a vehicle with "52" will have been registered between September 2002 and March 2003. So the sequence has been 01,51,02,52,03,53,04,54 etc. So in the UK, come the 1st of September or 1st of April, you're always looking out for a car with the new registration number on it, if only as a hang over from what you used to do as a kid. There is still a bit of an obsession for having a newer registration, a car with a 53 plate would sell for less than an identical car with an 04 plate even though it might have only been registered one day earlier, but the plate suggests it is a year older (i.e. 2003 compared to 2004). There used to be only one annual change on 1st September every year, but new car sales tending to plummet during August every year (though this was a great time to pick up a bargain), and dealers couldn't cope with demand every 1st September. You still get this a bit now even with the 6-monthly system, but it's no-where near as bad. So there you go! |

Was very informative and just showed that you have too much spare time on your hands. Will Land Rover please fix his car so he has something else to do  (like call them up again to fix it  )
