2009 Freelander 2 TD4 HSE Auto Rimini Red
Now Driving an AUTO HSE

Have finally changed to an auto HSE and love the extras from my previous SE manual but car seems a little nosier engine wise and seems to rev more especially when cold.

I also think the 18 inch wheels give me more nosie than my previus 17 inch wheels

These things may be normal but I`m a little paranoid after having spent so much again to upgrade..

Any auto drivers car to give me their thoughts... 09 Plate Rimini Red Freelander 2 HSE with Roofrails, Side Mouldings, Sidetubes and Privacy Glass

I went from a SE manual to a HSE auto too Very Happy

The autos do rev a little more, but i don't think its any noisier than my old one

From 17" to 19" I have not heard any noticeable difference either, the ride is just slightly firmer Former Mod/Member, with the most post & Chicken George Arch nemesis

Could it be a different brand of tyres on your new one that are slightly noisier Question

Went from Goodyear to Pirelli 18" tyres and noticed thar the Pirelli's were a bit quieter. Stornaway grey SE auto with 18" alloys

The torque converter gives the impression of a slipping clutch. The engine speed is not directly related to the road wheels as the system gives you the best ratio for the work required. As your engine does not deliver full power when cold, the torque converter will allow it to run faster to make up for this. It should sound more "normal" once it warms up. There are ways of causing the box to "lock up" and largely avoid this slip, (I think putting it in command shift does this?) but I haven't driven an auto Freely so I'm not too sure of the datails.
Warning related to this - as road speed is not necessarily related to engine speed, it's possible for road speed to rise without any change in engine revs - watch out for speed cameras!

Ye past master isn't far off

Our auto is the same. When everything's cold it feels like there's some 'slip' in the transmission...Not 100% why it does this as more revs on a cold engine isn't good. I always take it easy until it's behaving more like norm after a minute or 2.

Once warm and moving the transmission locks the clutches, so that revs and speed increase inproportion to each other, in the same way as a manual would.

Have a bit of patience when it's clap cold for the first couple of minutes...more than 2-2500 rpm's starting to ask for trouble from a diesel! Mine: 2012 Golf GTI Edition 35

England 2007 Freelander 2 TD4 SE Auto Baltic Blue

I have heard that engines rev harder when cold to warm up quicker to reduce emissions, Yet another EU directive??. Gone, 2007 TD4 SE Auto Baltic blue, clear side repeaters, full sized alloy spare.

No that's wrong, it's to do with being down on power and not working correctly when very cold, so diesel auto's compensate by having the revs run higher, whereas petrols are on a choke/high idle and running rough in a similar way. Mine: 2012 Golf GTI Edition 35
