I've been told by both an LRE guy and LR Assist that it's the intelligent 4WD system adjusting back to 50% front/50% rear as it always re-starts in this mode.

Both my XS and SE (both manual) have done this.

As most of you know due to 'some' problems I had/have with my FL2 I had a chance to drive the i6 and the td4. So here's my observations: Both - diesel and i6 - do a high pitch sound when you stop the car. However the diesel does a much higher frequence one. If the high pitched sound was the 4x4 then it should be the same on diesel's and i6's. I would suspect that the higher pitch on the diesel's has sth to do with the diesel turbo cooling. The sound on the i6 resembles more sth like high pressure fluid running in a pipe, whereas the diesel sound reminds me sth like a very high speed fan.
