So a few comments:
Doc, I most certainly won't tell you boil your head Laughing I put an observation on the forum and expected comments criticisms and the rest. Driving style will influence mpg and I'm convinced my driving will get the best mpg that the car can give, so it brings me to believe that a firmware update is needed (thanks also to AndyT) as I said in an earlier comment I was amazed at what a totally different mpg I got out of an auto loan car.
RalphK Thumbs Up and Tandemman your mileage is shorter than ours and your getting 30mpg Thumbs Up
Just rang the dealer and spoke to the service manager about the problem - it's going in on Friday this week for a while you wait full firmware upgrade (about an hour) Very Happy .
Thanks to all again (I'll let you know if anything has changed by Monday next week)

McP - Without wanting to risk boiling of head, how are you calculating the consumption? Just thinking that it may even be something as daft as (sharp intake of breathe) school boy error...

School boy error from 30 years ago....good try but nope, not that one Laughing
Option 1: Check the readout on the car, regularly resetting the trip (every few days/months).
Option 2: Constantly log the mileage since purchased. Litres at a fill up divided by 4.55 to get gallons used divided by mileage travelled since last fill up (61.42 litres = 13.5 gallons to do 292 miles = 21.63 mpg). I've been trying premium diesel every now and again as they claim you'll get more mpg Rolling with laughter
I appreciate your comments - thanks.

try some Morrisons best diesel Thumbs Up or fit some nice more streamlined 18 inch wheels. I think you have one split spoke to many, this causes excessive turbulence Confused

Love catching up on the banter every time I log in...it could be a full time hobby keeping up with this forum! The reason I asked about the mileage on the car is that we used to have a Disco 3, and when it was approaching service mileage, economy would drop off, up to about 20% sometimes. I've heard Stornoway cars are more economical though, or it could be the spoiler you get on an HSE now Laughing Mine: 2012 Golf GTI Edition 35

Ok so a few days after my post I got the car into my local dealership for a one hour 'while you wait' tweak. A couple of cappuccino's and a handfull of those biscuits that taste strangely burnt but are so 'moreish' and a full reset of the ECU in the gearbox was carried out plus other stuff that could affect shift change etc.
Immediately on the drive home I could tell that the shift timing was different both up and down, one week on and the avg is now hovering around 26/27 mpg - exact same duty cycle, short runs all in auto mode and I'm very happy Thumbs Up

I have a 57 plate SE auto and normally get 34mpg in mixed usage, 30 mile commute, 2 miles to Tesco etc.
On long trips gets to 38ish
Caravan (sorry CG) 25ish
Rally marshalling 30ish.

Car has covered 21k miles.

Missed that one....

Morrisons, Tesco, Sainsbury all get their fuel from the same place. As do BP... when the mood takes them. Go and sit outside Vopak Terminal, West thurrock. Their main client is Greenergy and they blend the fuel, stick it in a tank and the tankers take it away!! Hi Darling, I'll be home in 10 mins. If I'm not back, please read this message again...
