People's brains tell them to slow down when they see the road ahead narrowing, this theory is used in speed calming measures in housing estates by use of traffic islands. A lot of people are not able to judge the width of their vehicles very well ! and so slow down to avoid colliding with the islands?

When you are driving along a street with parked vehicles on each side of the road and meet a car coming the other way the majority of people will slow down when passing the oncoming vehicle although there is ample room to pass each other.

Narrow lanes in theory make people slow down and take more care to avoid colliding with the car in the next lane?

Clear as mud now ??? Very Happy Very Happy

i take it there's a clue to your profession in your name, eh? Bow down
my point is that they do slow down, but it only needs some idiot on there mobile or suchlike, to swerve a little, and I have nowhere left to go to avoid them.

But mate were not talking about a housing estate, were talking about a motorway some people can't even drive in a straight line on a good day never mind on a motorway doing 50 MPH.

Thanks Doc!

Yes, There are people who just cannot drive in a straight line no matter what speed they are going along at? The idea is to reduce the chances of having an accident but nothing can ever be 100% foolproof? Very Happy
