Help - Gear Selector cable

Hello,

The gear selector cable disconnected from the gearbox on my Freelander 2. AA mechanic got me back on the road temporarily. Used a rubber glove over the ball joint to the gear box and secured the socket from the cable with a tie. see picture.

I understand this won't last long. Currently unable to source a new replacement part (lr072112). Land Rover has confirmed they are currently out of stock, and there's no estimated time of arrival.

Unfortunately, the mechanics I've spoken to are not interested in fitting a salvaged part and have quoted me 3/4 hours of labor for the repair for a new part. I assume this is fair and not a easy job.

I understand many car makes and models, including some Land Rovers, have a gear linkage repair kit. However, it seems there isn't one available for the Freelander 2.

So, my once-reliable Freelander 2, which has served me well for years, is currently off the road until further notice, incapacitated by a plastic socket. Partner, understandably, doesn't want to ferry the toddlers around. Concerned about the risk of break down and getting stuck

Would appreciate any experiences or opinions you have.

I can't see how replacing a cable is a 3 or 4 hour job.
It doesn't look very involved to me. Maybe they're just being cautious or they're over quoting so you will go elsewhere. Hyundai Ioniq 5 Ultimate. The family car.

When mine went it was a long job and the mechanic said he never wanted to do it again.
It involved taking a lot of interior trim/ console out to get to the gear lever end. Richard M

it might be worth looking on amazon at the universal repair kit ,im sure you could adapat some thing,or even make one yourself.the rac carry a horseshoe type clip that ive used on all sorts of linkages.ecp carry a kit but im not sure what its like, you could go there and look at one.

Thanks, that part does appear to be the same. Great to have the option.

I don't have a manual but will look into it. Can't say I am confident based on what's I have read/heard so far.

I am hopeful in finding a universal repair kit. Or something similar for a longer term fix.

Thanks again everyone. appreciate the replies

i have the same issue with mine, i have tried to make a clip with two M5 bolts but i found it a struggle to feed the clip through and then try to get the bolts in. So im back to a couple of cable ties atthe minute

Close up you can see the metal insert but im confused at when they say these have to be torqued up to 20nm, I can spin the the top of the fitting but the white insert also turns along with the metal cup inside, is this suppose to do this
