Diff oil leak and vibration after new diff pinion bearing

Hi all,

I had the diff reconditioned after getting whine about 8 month/ 6K miles ago.

It’s my wife’s car and she doesn’t go on the motorway much but we did the other day and noticed above 80, there is a lot of vibration which was making my teeth rattle.

I just looked under the car and noticed oil leaking from the diff (where the near side driveshaft comes out)

So wondering if the diff bearing change done by a Landy specialist is to blame for the vibration and if the oil leak could be related, or is it likely a coincidence?

Looking at the invoice I was charged for output shaft oil seals so I guess they’ll have to put that right. Is it possible the vibration is related or something they have done wrong when changing the pinion bearing?

Thanks for your help.

Check that the driveshaftjoint has not popped out of the diff. I know of one occasion where it happened and torned the splines of at the end. Hard to see at the left hand side as the driveshaftjoint sits in a "cup" in the diff housing.

This might not be your problem but a few FL2s ago I had a rear diff bearing job done under warranty and afterwards I noticed oil under the diff. I took it back and they said that too much oil had been put in. The story went that the oil came in litre bottles and the tech had just overfilled it and that only 700ml is required. They took some out and all OK after that.

If you have vibration I would check the CV joints. 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto
5 x FL2 4 manual + 1 auto

Have you checked the air pipe. If they get blocked the oil level rises and pressure builds up within the unit causing a blow out through the seals. Just an idea.

Thanks for the suggestions.

Funnily enough it was leaking when they first did it and when I took it back they said they must have overfilled it and spilt some fluid in the honeycombe struction on the top of the diff that was holding the oil and causing it to drip down.
