Any one used them? Are they any good?

Been with RAC for best part of 50 years but never had to call them out so I don't know if they are any good but I do know they are about twice the price of Green Flag.

I use Tesco Club card vouchers to pay for my RAC cover.

I have mostly had automatic 4x4s and I used to alternate between the AA & RAC to get the new member deals. When I was with the RAC about 10 years ago they sent one of their vans fairly quickly but couldn't fix it and couldn't tow me so they arranged for a local sub-contract truck to piggy back my car to the menders. Green flag were cheaper so I moved to them for a while - it was a similar experience except it was a local recovery company which came to me first so was better/quicker. These days I just have cheap cover from startrescue - called them out once and they sent a local who was fine. I don't think there's much in it these days in terms of service. I'm sure I remember my dad telling me about the days when the AA would salute you as a member - imagine that these days

I'm with Green Flag, but like you I've never had to call them. So not much help. Sorry

The caravan and motorhome club use Green flag as their rescue organisation so they can't be that shabby? Never had to use them but others in the club say they are good.

I used to be with Green Flag years go with my D2 that kept on breaking down (dodgy gearbox repair by the dealer).
They allowed 5 call outs per year and I used all them in 6 months but their recovery service was excellent, even down to using an old tube to put on the bell housing to confirm the failed flex plate.

As vehicles have become more and more reliable ........... these organisation services become less and less used by motorist.
But I don't see their prices come down.

Unlike vehicle insurance .......... breakdown 'insurance' is NOT mandatory!

At one time, recently, the AA claimed they were the 4th 'emergency' service ............ that must have annoyed the Police, Fire Brigade and Ambulance Service ................ let alone the Armed Forces !!!!!

I've been with Green Flag for quite a while, and have used their services a few times. They don't have their own employees or rescue vans, but instead, the Green Flag system employs a very wide network of garages/mechanics who provide emergency cover. I would guess most of these garages are privately owned. If you are able to provide some detail of the nature of your breakdown, I believe the right kind of rescue vehicle is likely be sent to you straight away (eg, a low-loader if you know you'll need recovery). I have only ever been 'rescued' by experienced and capable mechanics., and have never had to wait above about 40 minutes for help.

I like the fact that with optional 'Personal Cover', any car I happen to be in is covered by the Green Flag service, and my wife also has the same level of cover on our one policy. It costs us about £100 per year. Currently enjoying:

Yep - this was in the days when AA patrols rode motor cycle combinations, with a tool-box sidecar. The rider would salute any car he met which was displaying an AA badge. The practice was stopped when it was pointed out that the rider was not in full control of his motorcycle when he only had one hand on the handlebars...  Currently enjoying:

One point at least with the RAC is that it's a breakdown service, In the event of an accident there may be an add on charge to get you home or to a garage.

Like all these things you need to move on each year. Currently I get cover via a Nationwide Account I use also give me Travel Insurance. Car has to be in good order with a MOT and service record (thats Me out of warranty). FL2 MY10 TD4 GS traded in at 2 years
FL2 MY13 TD4 GS Current

green flag now for 10 years, never had to use them thankfully, but I am now wondering with my increased age and size of car whether I can call them out for something I could manage years ago like a puncture/wheel change if need be . . . .

Used to be with ADAC but then they ceased cover to non-German residents.
Then discovered Drivers Guardian, £79 for full Europe cover which I don't think can be beaten by anyone. Not only is it an exceptional price, they also get very good reviews. Like the majority of folk on here it seems, I've been fortunate enough not to have needed roadside assistance so cannot comment on their response times and such
