RRS PHEV

The RRS is the only current LandRover vehicle that appeals - would not spend the money on a Full Fat. I think it looks quite good although a bit too similar to the DS from the back and of course stuffed full of techno garbage which I would have to tolerate. The PHEV is probably the one to go for if one wants to appease the political eco do-gooders.
Have I lost something in translation - can it really be true that it takes seven and a half hours on home charge to get an electric range of (in ideal ciircumstances) 31 miles???
FFS! What a complete and utter engineering ballix!!! How can that possibly make sense on any planet saving rationale?
The lunatics really are taking over if that is the way forward for vehicle propulsion.
I need enlightenment or placement on a stupidity indoctrination programme. Can the panel please recommend a suitable course of treatment for me?

Given the RRS reliability I doubt you will get 31 miles before something breaks or falls off Razz

LR is correct , Beer! lots of it. FL2 Metropolis, Loire Blue, ebony/ivory

The 31 mile electric range is enough to get you to the nearest LR dealership when the engine conks out - saves LR sending out technicians....

Maybe 31 miles is far enough to complete the testing for emissions and mileage - you know the one that lets you into London because it doesn't kill polar bears, and the one that allows you to brag that your car does 1,000,000 miles to the gallon (for comparison purposes, tests done in a laboratory may not reflect actual fuel consumption).

one of the RRS Sport members was going to buy one but cancelled as LR would not confirm that the LR Extended Warranty he would need to take till a PHEV came available, would cover the known issue of crankshaft failure in his current RRSPORT

Surprisingly, he has opted for Mini COuntryman PHEV Former Mod/Member, with the most post & Chicken George Arch nemesis

is the charge time from a standard 13a socket or with a specialist home charger?.

apparently 3 phase chargers are fastest, I have 3 phase available on farm so maybe one day Ill end up with a decent charge system At work

funny you ask as Tim couldn't find out, the dealers didn't know, but you could place an order Shocked

turns out its a normal lead, but a fast charge is available at a optional extra at no doubt 3 times the cost of other brands Former Mod/Member, with the most post & Chicken George Arch nemesis

This Eco green electric lark is a load of political green credentials bo Censored oks(I would have said " Censored "but think I may have got told off.i recall a test on one of the jap electric cars on the "proper"top gear by jessa, when they worked out all the costs and emissions it took to make and ship the pile of crap,it was cheaper to buy a full fat rr(nice car)
And I know what I would have.
How many charges can the batteries take and how much to replace them, also most of the technology in these things is far beyond a good mechanic, even more apt to the supplying dealers who really don't know sh Censored t.

let's say 3,000 charges on a lithium battery before capacity falls below 80% - and that's a good quality battery (cheaper = 1,000 discharges)

for a Nissan leaf, lets say 100 miles per charge (a friend has one, and gets 80-110miles without aircon)
so that's 300,000 miles, well beyond the life expectancy of most owners.
But a poorer quality battery is still 100,000 miles - still out of warranty so why should the manufacturer care?

The problem is what do you do with the battery once it is no longer wanted?
The last time I looked (2 years ago) the last lithium battery recycling plant in the UK went up in flames - they do that a lot.
Lithium electrolyte bursts into flame if it gets damp, hot or the membrane ruptures, and once on fire it will not extinguish - pouring water on makes it burn faster. Stripping the battery safely does need to be done in an inert atmosphere, they are constructed to withstand a fair impact, so need a lot of effort to strip.

So you can't bury it, you can't burn it, it is very tricky to recycle and there is a limited supply - environmentally friendly I think not.
Hydrogen fuel cells - now that could make some kind of sense, but only if you can store it for long periods (small atoms that like to disappear), or maybe have a charging station that manufactures the fuel and stores it under pressure at each household, by electrolysis. Tangiers Orange - gone, missing her

a friend has 2 electric bikes(not cheap ones)these were serious track bikes,he nearly lost his bungalow, they smelt acrid smoke, ran to the integral garage where they found one of the bikes going off like a very big roman candle, threw a bucket of water over the bloody thing which made it 10 times worse they had to crawl along the passage to get away from the dense acrid smoke.fire brigade turned up and were not too sure on what to do except go in with breathing gear as the smoke was so thick, drag the bike out front where it was still going up and the street started to get very smokey, neighbours were told stay in doors and close windows.one of the fire guys said they did not have any real training with this stuff, imagine a car going up! Shocked
upshot was after a lot of hassle with bike manufacturer and the insurance co,they finally paid up in excess of £30000 all walls ceilings and surfaces had to be stripped, clothing and furniture had to be binned.it was around 4 months before they got the bungalow back, the good bit was the bike company offered him 50% off a new battery Shocked Rolling with laughter
I think I will stick with diesel. Whistle

did I not read some time ago that jlr group were working on fuel cells? gone

lets face it.......... its an exact replica scenario of when diesel cars became seriously popular (tax incentives, demonization of existing fuels, dodgy scientific evidence knee jerk implementation of poorly thought through laws and policies)

in 10 years time after we have all jumped ship to avoid paying £1k a year road tax on our efficient 10 year old diesel motors, the government will then say the evidence was flawed and electric cars are killing people and the environment and impose high VED and battery disposal costs....... round and round we go Shocked
