I'm currently looking to buy a Freelander 2. I'll be going to our local LR main dealer as we've always had good service and had a number of cars off them. I accept this means ill pay more but for the peace of mind... ill,also get 12m warranty, service and mot included.

Originally I was looking for a 2009 onward td4 of gs spec or higher. I'd though of 09 onwards due to the start stop engine, better fuel economy, lower road tax and upgraded haldex unit.

Is there anything else that changed that's worth having? Reason being that I've been offered a 57 plate (built in 2008) xs spec, one owner from new, very low mileage (47k) up at £11k. So it has all the gear I wanted, exceptionally low mileage and has been well cared for. I'm a bit torn, do I hold out for something newer and potentially pass up a cracking motor or do the benefits of 09 onwards outweigh this?

I had to go and check the figures on Autotrader first but, looking at what else is available, £11,000 is pretty brave pricing, even for a 1 owner, low mileage, car. It's still an 8 year old car that could easily have been used for a lot of short journeys and I would try and buy newer if at all possible, especially if you can get that 2 year approved warranty.

I've only ever owned 2011 on FL2's, so can't offer much advice on the differences between the older and the newer ones, other than the fact that the earlier versions weren't viable to run as company cars (which I had at the time), as their CO2 emission figures were much higher before 2011.

It's a very fair point; because of the 2008 car's age, the availability of worthwhile aftermarket warranties is going to be very limited.

My Freelanders were all pretty reliable, but if your rear diff or haldex unit fails (and they do), then you'll be glad of a decent warranty

Thanks chaps. The extended warranty was something id thought about but wasn't all that fussed about. Spending an extra £5k to get a 2yr warranty approved used for me won't outweigh the cost of spending 11kish on an older one. Even if the diff goes and it costs me 1k to fix I'm still 4k better off. Granted with age I know more smaller things can start to wear.

I had thought 11k seemed top end even given the condition so its something to think about.

But if the pricing was ignored for now, other than the haldex and start/stop, is there a trying that changed on later model years up to around a 10 plate (still pre facelift) that's worth having ?

Nothing major that I can think of, although there were minor specification changes from time to time (I couldn't tell you what though). It's debatable whether stop/start is worth having, particularly on the earlier cars where its operation seems a bit hit-and-miss. The Gen 4 Haldex is nice to have, but unless you're using the car off-road I suspect you wouldn't notice any difference in practice.

In terms of the TD4 engine timeline is this right (claimed figures)?

Launch to 2008 - 160bhp / 400Nm / 37.7mpg Combined
2009-2010 - 160bhp / 400Nm / Start-Stop / 42.2mpg Combined
2010-2014 - 150bhp / 420Nm / Start-Stop / 45.6mpg Combined

As such I assume in real-world terms there will be little difference between the launch car fuel economy and anything up to 2010. Given the start-stop won't really do much for mpg on a constant drive. And then a real world increase in mpg due to the re-map of the TD4 lump from 2010 onwards?

Just to say the mpg figs that you are working on are really manufacturers fiction and nothing like real life.

My MY2010 (pre facelift) auto, non stop start, just about manages an average of 32mpg (now done 64k miles) and that is a mix of quite a bit of motorway and shorter journeys, never more than 70mph with a very gentle right foot.

The later models do rather better but nothing at your price point is, I suspect, going to offer much better mpg than bottom half of the 30's though I stand to be corrected from a manual stop start owner of course!

Our 09 reg car is a 160 auto non stop start. The best ever mileage I have achieved is 40 mpg and that was on a 200 mile run down to Wales starting very early and pressing the accelerator pedal as if it was made of egg shells. An average week would see it matching the 32 that SakoQuad states, and that assumes it gets a few 20 mile runs thrown in . The car is never on the road in rush hour or used for commuting . If it were just used to pop to the shops and back 30 would not be achievable .

MPG is also very tyre dependant on any car , and more so on 4x4s. You can gain or lose a few MPG depending upon on your choice. We run Scopion ATR, so our fuel consumption isn't too bad considering. 2009 GS Auto Zermatt Silver - Sold June 21 after 10 years of ownership
