Injectors - cleaning, testing, coding ?

Hi guys,

I have noticed an unburnt diesel smell and a bit more smoke on my 2007 freelander 2 td4s recently, but I don't think there is any significant loss of power. So I think there may be a leak within the injectors. I've seen here a link to a french tutorial on cleaning injectors, so I taught, that I could take them out and have them tested somewhere, maybe even resealed if it is possible. However I have a few questions:

1. Can I just take the injectors out, have them repaired and put them back in, or does this process include some coding?
2. What parts should be new when putting the injectors back in? I have read just about those copper washers.
3. What is your experience with repairing injectors? Can it be done, or should i buy new ones?
4. Mechanics at LR told me, that I shouldn't drive the car without having the injectors replaced, because there is a risk of pistons damage. They want almost €1000 (excl. work) for one injector and they told me that mostly there are at least 2 injectors faulty. Is this true?

What's your opinion about this? I'm afraid, that the LR guys will not test the injectors and just buy new ones.

1. Don't repair them as they are piezzo injectors. No coding if you put them in the same order. Coding is for the engine ECU to know each injector's tolerances. This is another reason for not mechanically clean them.
2. Copper washer.
3. New ones. Or have them cleaned with a chemical solution, in place. For example: http://www.wynns.eu/product/diesel-system-purge/
4. Engine damage occur only when the injectors are blocked open. As for the price, I, for one, would not pay that price. I would look for another source. The injectors are shared among many other car models.

But the unburt diesel smell could come from a leaking pipe. Look below the engine cover at the fuel system components.
As for the smoke could have other causes: mass air flow meter, egr, etc. Check them all.

Copper washers seating injectors.

Years ago we flashed them with heat from a blow torch and reused them on the new or serviced injectors. A trick of the trade then. Thumbs Up FL2 MY10 TD4 GS traded in at 2 years
