Sidetubes with or without steps

Hello,
I wonder if buying sidebars with or without steps (original land rover side tubes)
they are strong or not ?
we car use it to walk on in even if there are without steps ?
if they are used to protect from chocks from other car's doors ?
if this is really a obstable for every road and snow?

Thank you for your feedback

Paul

Google Translation :
Am also interested to buy sidebars to protect a little better my Free 2010 HSE ... I saw an Italian manufacturer that also produces many bull bars not bad at all, but running boards, side tubes , rear protections .. all at a more "reasonable" price compared to some ..! I give you the address if you wish.

I have the Steps on mine and it had 2 benefits, 1 my short legged wife can get in and out easier and 2, handy in a tight space where you can't open the door far enough to get out... just stand on the step...ease yourself up then step down onto the floor. Offset your Carbon emissions by boycotting Baked Beans and all Green Vegitables.

I had Chrome Bars on my Freelander 1 but found them very dangerous to stand on.
Looked superb though.
Now at 75 and very accident prone I have to err on the side of caution rather than looks.
Alloy edge on the Steps gets discoloured very quickly and very difficult to clean off. Offset your Carbon emissions by boycotting Baked Beans and all Green Vegitables.

"Alloy edge on the Steps gets discoloured very quickly and very difficult to clean off."

Came across this problem today. First time I had to wash the car and noticed that the anodised aluminium?/alloy? edge was hard to clean and remove staining etc. So, what is it and what can clean it up? 2009 Freelander 2 TD4 HSE Auto - Stornoway Grey - Hers (His, really)
