ECU serial numbers

Hi Guys, I have found an ECU set from a breakers that has .....

the ecu, clock set, key holder and key, I am hoping this is all I need to cure my P1259 (immobiliser) code issue but mine is a 2007 ECU code 6g91-12a650-ad, the set that I have found ends ae is this difference a date code or software issue does anyone know?

As I am changing these parts as a set I am hoping that I have no need to reprogram ,anyone done this before?

I would say it won't work. Everything is programmed to the car it was built with.

The ECU has to communicate with other ECU's around the car on the can-bus System and they won't recognise each other.

It would have been better to buy a new ECU for your own car and have it programmed. That is of course if it is an ECU fault.

new ECU are grossly over expensive, is it not possible to have a LR tech with diagnostics tool reprogram/recode a 2nd hand one ?

surely even if a new ECU was bought it would need recoding to the specific car, so why not be able to do the same with a 2nd hand one ?

It all depends if it has been 'divorced' from the original car. Modern ECU's have the Chassis number of the car programmed into the Firmware of the ECU. If you try plugging it in to a different car, it will not talk to it.

Messing with can-bus with parts from other cars is a complete mine field.

In this case, I think I would be getting a dealer to Diagnose whats wrong and replacing the part in question.

There are too many people out there that try to sort these types of problems on the cheap, when in fact it can end up costing them more than getting it sorted properly.

There is too much 'scare mongering' regarding Dealers being too expensive, when most are happy to work with the customer rather than against them. Most would rather negotiate a lower cost to do a Job, than not do it at all. Freelander 2 HSE Lux 2013MY - Barolo Black with Ivory Leather. yeh I have heard of having to 'divorce' components from cars before. Think it was something as simple as a stereo head unit on a Vauxhall IIRC.

CANBUS really is the devils own work, but without it dealers servicing departments would probably go out of business.

Is it only main dealers who have the capability of doing this job ?

What is there hourly rate now ?

Don't know how relevant this is but my wife's Peugeot 207 had a problem with it's ABS controller and the new one had to be programmed to talk to the ECU, the only people who could do this was a Peugeot dealer. I suspect it's the same with LandRover as I understand that if you change the radio you have to go through the same procedure and the same goes for some of the fuse boxes (!). 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

There are companies out there that can reprogram second hand ECU s. Have a word with Gary at Alive tuning because when I had a problem with mine he supplied a second hand ECU,fitted,reprogrammed then mapped it on my drive in less than an hour including a full software upgrade direct from Land Rover using the 4g on his telephone.

There's a few companies on the net that repair ecu's. Maybe that's worth a try? Black MY2013 SD4 GS Auto, Wood Company Armrest, Freel2 sticker.

Have spoke to a couple of company's and they can't test the ecu so was just wondering if sh was the cheapest option I may just order one and see how I go nothing to loose if it dosnt work

To be honest,, gettin a new unit is the easy way, perhaps more secure in a way. new unit with waranty..
Now depending on what module you need to replace.. some modules are "locked" to the vehicle and some are not.
If you buy a 2.nd hand module and this is locked to another VIN it will not work in your car. BUT.. you can make it work, but its takes some work or someone to get payed to do the job. Grabbin a 2.nd hand module that can not be used in another car needs to be "virginized". in other technical words, you need to find the chip that stores the VIN number, A chip reader/writer and a program to edit the info that is on the chip. You have to find what adress the VIN number is stored and replace the hex code with FFFFFFFF, write the file back to the chip and the ecu is "Virginized" and ready to be reprogramed. There are tools out there that can take a "dump" of the complete ecu for you to edit it and write it back via OBD connector on the car.
