235/55/19 101H 105H - Whats the difference??

Hi all,

Probably a bit of a daft question, whats the difference between 101H and 105H tyre rating? Only asking as I am due to buy some new tyres and im getting General Grabber ATs, the 101H are £96 a leg and the 105H are £140 ish. Oh and the 101H according to the website have a better fuel rating than the 105H?? Confused

Thanks

think its do with the load rating, what are the current/original tyres rated at ?

the letter (V,W,X,Y) is to do with a speed rating and 4x4 tyres are quite often XL rated for load due to the weight of vehicle as standard and then any load that's put in or on the car.

The load rating indicates the maximum weight that each tyre can carry. 101 = 800kg, 105 = 925kg.

In principle four corners at 800kg (assuming equal weight distribution) would give an allowable gross vehicle weight of 3.2 tonnes, which is well in excess of the weight of a loaded FL2. That said, looking up the FL2 on the Black Circles site gives recommended load ratings of 103 - 105 depending on wheel size (with 17" being 104). So you may want to see if you can find the 105s a bit cheaper somewhere.

IIRC the GG ATs on my car are 108s, and they were about £115 fitted a couple of years ago.

ok thanks chaps, I think on mine at the min are 235/55/19 105V so i think sticking to 105H is probably the best bet rather than 101H.

Thanks again. 2010 HSE SD4 in Santorini black

Unadvisable to fit a tyre with a lower load rating that was fitted by the manufacturer.
I can't comment for the UK but will most likely end you up in hot water with most regulatory institutions if there is an
Incident and this is discovered and will void any protection. Different speed ratings are permissible.
Please be aware that speed and load ratings are given at a tyres normal operating pressure. If a tyre is under inflated then a tyre will fail if you run anywhere near the tolerances of that tyre. Especially important in offroading in soft sand where under inflating a tyre can assist in this condition but speed should be kept to a minimum and inflated to normal running pressure as soon as returning to normal driving conditions. MY15

does that seem to the the general conciousness? not to go to a 101 rating if the standard is 105? 2010 HSE SD4 in Santorini black

I would say its not only the general consensus but is best safe practice.

If the tyre you put on is not rated correctly then it wont be up to the job and may blow out. Potentially dangerous.

I would always go for an equal if not better rated tyre to be on the safe side of things.

If the tyres a lower load rating then its probably a lighter construction so that would mean less weight for the vehicle to shift so make it more economical, thats probably all thats in the better fuel rating claim??

yeah i certainly dont want to compromise on safety with 2 small kids in the car. so ill stick to the 105 for the load rating and changing from a V to the general grabber tyre which is a H is ok? 2010 HSE SD4 in Santorini black

yeh V to H should be no issue on the speed rating

think the V is rated to 150mph and H to 140mph or there abouts IIRC.

so unless you have fitted a rocket engine to your FL2 then H rated are more than enough

the GG tyres are really good, should last easily up to about 50k miles and I found them to be good in all conditions all year round

Don't have a LR anymore having sold my white FL2 in my profile pic in the summer. Didn't fit my lifestyle anymore but I do miss have a LR big time.

I had GG AT2 fitted to both my FL1, and got close on to 60k out the first set with about 5mm still left all round.

I had the newer GG AT fitted to my last FL2 and they performed equally as well, still with 9mm tread all round after 10k before I sold it.

They gripped really well in dry, and dispersed water well in the wet with no aquaplaning ever. In mud they were sure footed, but did struggle in deeper sludge. The same for snow, great in loose snow but no better than racing slicks on compacted snow/ice.

You did get a bit more droning noise but then that is to be expected as the tread pattern is a lot more aggressive than a road biased tyre.

Other than that I would really recommend them. I paid £112 each fitted for mine as well which I think is amazing value for money considering the wear rate.
