Turbo noise

Hi All

I have read through loads of posts on here, and it looks like you are a helpful bunch.

My Freelander 2 HSEe has developed a sound like rushing wind when the turbo kicks in, which I assume is therefore turbo related.

I had the same problem with my Freelander 1 a few years ago, so I think its pretty safe to guess its a hose leaking.

I have noted a few other posts with similar symptoms, but could anyone please explain how to change the hoses - or even where they are!

Is it something that can be done on a drive, or does it need to go to a garage? I can wield a spanner, so I am not a novice, just a bit green as far as turbos are concerned!

I spoke to my local LR dealer and they are asking £132 to take a look - which will then be deducted from the final bill if I get the work done there - what happened to 'pull it round the back and we will take a look'! I have used them for over 15 years, but was a bit surprised with that.

Anyway, any help gratefully received.

There are two hoses that fail. See below.

One short, just below the electronic throttle, that can be changed on the drive. This is the most culprit.
And one long, horizontal, at the exit of the intercooler, in a way in continuation of the above short one, after a plastic part of the pipe. This one is harder to change on the drive, or at least you need to get under the (elevated) car's front.

Im having the same issue started today im going to change the top one first, had a feel but can't seem to find any holes, let us know how you go on

As the performance has not dropped, apart from a very rare stutter as the turbo tries to kick in as the car accelerates from low speeds, is it okay to drive, or is this an urgent repair?

I will try and get the top hose changed and report back.

Italy 2007 Freelander 2 TD4 HSE Manual Nazca Sand

Replaced mine on the drive, changed all four to silicon. You will find it easier if you remove the front bumper first as the intercooler pipes are easier to reach that way. removing the front bumper is quite straight forward and there is a utube video showing the method. If you change all four you will also need to remove the undershield, once again straightforward with only 6 bolts to remove.

Sorry if this is a daft question but can you check the end float of the turbo when you change the hoses or would you need to remove the turbo for that?

Had the car checked at a local independent garage, and they could hear the noise when the car is accelerating but no noise when standing. Still full power, no noticeable smoke, in fact the mechanic thought it was a really good drive and was still full powered.

Checked the hoses, no leaks.

Noise still there!

Any thoughts?

Changed mine had to buy the two pipes and plastic bit from stealers, top hose had a split but the engine warning light came on just before i replaced, all now ok no leaks but light satyed on Censored any ideas???

No warning light, just a noise!

Just been out and checked power okay, but the noise is like a loud hairdryer - only when under acceleration - normal cruising along there is no noise other than the usual Diesel engine background.

Alex - you suggest intercooler, would that be noticeable by sight? How can it be checked?

I have to do a couple of hundred miles over the next two days, but if its still running I will change the top hose on Wednesday anyway, just in case...

This is a pain, as I am at a loss...

Got to be a pipe Dave p there are 4 I believe this was the top one off my car 2010 I couldn't feel anything when on the car but found this after removal

My problem was just like yours, no noticeable power drop and hairdryer noise under load. I had a small split in the top hose but when I changed them all found there was a longer split in the lower hose connecting to the left side of the intercooler, that is the one that needed the undershield removed. I think the split only opened up under pressure as it was not visible as a split when the car was stationary. One thing to look for is any signs of oil as the air through the intercooler is oily and if the air is getting out you may find signs of a minor oil leak.

out of interest, is one side higher pressure than the other ? One has a metal middle the other a plastic middle ?
