I have recently become an owner of a Freelander 2 SE 2008 model. It has developed a noise which I am attempting to determine whether it is a fault or not. The problem is this, when I increase road speed a noise either from the road wheels or from the transmission. It goes up and down with the speed of the vehicle. I wouldn't describe it as a whine, it is more or load sort of humming noise and it is very audible.

So, I would like to ask people whether there is a fault with the transmission, if so, what, the tyres (they are Goodyear Wrangler 17inch), or is a normal for this sort of vehicle?

Please can someone help?

Probably your tyres I have wranglers on mine and they are very noisy. I have the same symptoms as you try driving on different road surfaces and see if the noise changes.

I took your advice and the noise is just the same regardless of being on smooth roads or rough ones. Doing some further investigation, I had my wife sitting in the back and she said to me the noise is coming from the back of the car. She has described as a drone and reminds her of like sitting at the back of a bus where you have the noise of the engine behind you. I took note of the speed of when the noise becomes apparent it is as soon as I hit 20mph an hour and the noise becomes rather unbearable when you slow down.

It feels to me as this could be transmission????

Diff Bearings, if it is it will get worse quickly, from is that a noise to kin hell that is in a thousand miles.
Cheaper option is a rear wheel bearing.

I've only had the car a short period of time, and it is second hand with about 68k miles on the clock. It does have a 12 months warranty on it. I will take it back to the dealer and see if he can get it fixed under warranty.

Just to further ask, roughly how long can I carry on with the car like this, and if it is either wheel bearings or rear diff, how much and how long will it take to fix?

Silly question but does it have roof bars ? My old freelander had OEM roof bars fitted and they were a rough fit. They hummed like mad at speed and the humming varied with the speed. I thought it was transmission until someone suggested it. It sounds very much like you problem.

We fitted General Grabber AT's and have found there to be a whine which has been put down to the harder compound however I did start to think it was the rear diff. 2007 LR Freelander 2 GS - factory tints, LR mud flaps, 2013 facelift)
Problems/solutions include: rear diff pinion replaced, stearing rack and pump replaced, alternator earth cable replaced (plus new alternator as misdiagnosed), throttle body replaced, MAP sensor replaced, secondary earth cable...

No there is no roof rack, and the problem has now been fixed. No wheel bearing and rear diff was shot and has been replaced by the dealer.
