So how did a US spoksman say that data from engines showed that they ran for four hours after last radio contact (with Malaysia)? Certainly widens the search area enough to include many airfields (possibly in China).

Also, no-one has confirmed that the "last" radio contact was actually the voice of either of the intended pilots. Everyone can spread it - Anyone can catch it. Stay home - the life you save can be your own!

Both Malaysian Airlines and Rolls Royce have stated that the story in the WSJ that the engines sent data for 4 hours is "inaccurate".

if they do, i didn't know that, thought they were just plugged in at the service intervals and downloaded Confused

Most commercial airliners will send some sort of data back to their base of operations whilst in flight - it might not be realtime though - it'll usually be in data "bursts".

This is so operations know where their aircraft are, how they are performing, whether they are running early/late and a whole host of other stuff.

I suspect this is the data to which they are referring.

come to think of it, i recall something about that once on a program i watched and that was about operations and them keeping an eye on data and calling in a replacement due to something in a report

Might be getting mixed up with something else, wont be the first time Laughing

Think Choccymonster may be correct - data is sent in bursts of upto 3kB.

"A critical aspect of the EHM system is the transfer of data from aircraft to ground. Aircraft Communications Addressing and Reporting System (ACARS) digital data-link systems are used as the primary method of communication. This transmits the Aircraft Condition Monitoring System (ACMS ) reports via a VHF radio or satellite link whilst the aircraft is in-flight".

Fact - all recently manufactured JCB excavators and earthmoving plant sends data regular to JCB works at Rocester Staffordshire both on the engine performance figures and on its location. In the US some states have higher regs on emissions than a neighbour so if a contractor hires a machine and takes it to a state where it doesn't comply, Rocester can ring the owning hire company and advise them of contravention.
.
So if humble excavators can transmit real time engine data I am sure that Aircraft Engines will be on a similar setup.

I work for a certain well known Caterpillar dealer.......we turn up at customers sites to repair machines before the chap driving it notices a fault thanks to cats product-link telematics Whistle Thumbs Up can also monitor fuel burn, lifetime payloads, average machine loading etc etc even haul road conditions!

Excuse my ignorance, but i still don't understand how a plane is lost !?
If cars have satellite tracking systems to locate them... Earthmoving equipment call home...
Surely in this day and age of constant satellite surveillance, radar, GPS, internet...... A plane disappears ?
Without trace ?
Surely there must be some device on board that would transmit location! Or even some ground monitoring
system would pick the plane up, or even get spotted by military ?
Am i missing something ?
