Engine noisy, now dead

Hi, Can anyone shed any light. My 2007 Freelander 2 2.2 td auto was making a loud rattling noise which seemed to be alternator belt/water pump area. Then the next day came to a sudden hault.
Now turns over very slowly making clunking noises but will not run.
Does this sound like camshaft failure or something more serious.
Freelanderspecialist.com can do an engine rebuild/overhaul, only thing is they are in Norfolk and I'm near Cambridge , just wondered if anyone had any better ideas or suggestions.
Spoke to R.J.Landrovers at Sawtry and they did not seem to want to know, so over to you guy's for help.

If its camshaft then that is serious. The lower cost and more reliable option may be a second hand engine. I was in that situation, I bought a virtually new engine for £1900 did the swap myself and then sold the old engine via eBay in chunks and got back £1200, and I've still got other parts yet to sell.
Pm me if you need any furthe discussion. Engine comes out very easily out the top, you don't even remove the bonnet. Topix instructions are crackers for engine out instructions.
.
Kind regards from Fred.

I was quite surprised when at the dealers, a brand new Discovery was there body off chassis, they said its easy to work on the gearbox that way and saves much time, and the body is only held on by I think they said 12 bolts?
Certainly easy to do an engine swop without the body in the way, and you wont risk scratching it, but the FL2 hasnt a separate chassis I know that.

For the FL Topix has you draining the autobox, draining the aircon, the power steering, undoing all if their pipes, taking the suspension off, all the driveshafts; then removing the subframe.... It goes on and on.
.
Like Frank Sinatra; I did it my way.
.
Beware if asking either a main dealer or and indie because if they follow Topix a hefty bill will happen; and that's before you look at the engine rebuild. My local Engine rebuild shop was hesitant about a crank regrind on these Peugeot / Citroen engines as he said they can tend to break at a journal shortly after.
.
Kind regards from Fred

Thanks for all your replies, sounds like a long weekend with the spanners and a replacement engine. Thanks again, I'll let you know how I get on.

Hi Alex,
.
The post is 'Engine removal' the info is on page 2.
.
It's a job probably simpler than other cars in that you leave the bonnet and radiators still fully installed.
Send me an air ticket and ill come and help!!

Thank you!
As for the air ticket, better to be for a beer/tea/coffee than for an engine out operation... Laughing
