Just took delivery of my new (demo) FL2 SE TD4 auto and drove it home from Melbourne to Qld (got an awesome deal in Melbourne compared with what I could get in Qld which made the trip worthwhile). Love the car so far.

On the trip home I used 138.1 litres of fuel over 1725 km which works out at 8 L/100km (trip computer indicated 7.7). This was basically straight cruising at around 100 kph using cruise control (using GPS to adjust for speedo error), so I found the consumption a little disappointing given the manufacturer's quoted figure for "extra-urban" of 5.7 L/100km. A Qld dealer had also told me that most clients had reported about 6 L/100km for highway driving, so I'm wondering whether this is something I should get checked out. Can others advise what your experience is with this model?

With a diesel engine you won't start getting optimum fuel economy until you've done about 10000 miles.
Official figures are always going to be better than the average driver can achieve as they tend to be done in controlled conditions rather than real world.

I'm getting 7.2 city driving with a manual with 18,000 on the clock

Dealer tells me that you don't get optimum fuel economy until they've done at least 10,000 km.
Might be a moot point now - my wife just had her first trip in the FL2 and reckons I'm not getting it back!

Also, fuel consumption will always be slightly poorer when using cruise control.

and im getting 7.6 city and outskirts of the city where i live ---80,000 klms laught more folks !

7.8 l/100km for me on the last tank, mixed driving.

That's 30.1 mpg in old money.

I can get that up to 41, which is about the claimed 5.7l/100km, sitting at about 95km/h with cruise control, if I reset the computer with a warm emgine. But, quite frankly, life's to short to drive that slowly everywhere. It is possible to beat the economy on cruise with careful driving, but only if you are concentrating more on your MPG that safe driving.

Just this weekend did a 320 mile round trip, mostly at motorway speeds with 3 passengers and got my best ever consumption - 34.7 mpg. Normally only used on short local trips where it does less than 25 mpg. Past: FL2 TD4 HSE Auto

I've had 4 freelander now,and the mpg seems to get better around 18/20 k miles,......just about the time I've sold them.  Current: Freelander 2 GS, Orkney Grey, Factory fit privacy glass, design pack and Clearview pack. Almond Leather ,rear spoiler,rear mudflaps.my13.

My one averages about 34mpg, could be better, but not disappointed either. Didn't buy it for its class leading fuel economy.  21MY Defender 90 S 3.0 D200

36000 miles and currently averaging around 38.7 more on a long run.

The only time I use less than 7l per 100km is when I'm carrying no passengers and I'm cruising on the highway and can use 6th gear.

Usually when I'm on the highway I have the family and a load of luggage. Then it usually sits around the mid 7's. Reflect on the past and plan for the future. But, above all - LIVE FOR THE MOMENT!!!

We have a 2010 GS Auto and live just north of Derby where it is mildly hilly. The fuel consumption is dramatically different depending upon where we drive. On local hilly runs of say 10 miles it will give 31mpg, go a bit further north and use the motorway it will give 34.5, going south where its flatter on one run I can get 39mpg. Towing the caravan going north say 26mpg, going south down and into Cornwall those Devon and Cornwall long hills kill the MPG down to 23.

38 Mpg quite easily.. (also from cold starts each day)

driving normally, no particular acceleration or severe braking

BUT: I live in a flat part of Italy, and don't live in a densely populated area (mainly extra-urban)



the most i got is 40 MPG ... but it was quite a pain driving like that !

on the highway at 100Km/hr - 39 Mpg
at 130 Km/hr - 34 Mpg

this is with winter tyres, which are slightly worse for fuel consumption.
