MY13 FL2 - No dipped/full headlights but fogs & DRLs ok.

Hi,
Bit of a strange one this. We have a 9 month old 2013MY Fl2 GS, which was absolutely fine this morning with a full set of working lights.

The car sat on my work carpark for the day, and when we started it to head home & tried to switch the lights on, for some reason the sidelights, mainbeams & dipped lights on both sides are completely dead.

Indicators, DRLs and front fogs are all fine; as is everything on the rear.

However, neither L or R side light clusters seem to be working.

I've called LR assist who are coming out to the office in the morning as there isn't a LR tech in our area this evening but just wondering if anyone has any ideas of something to check? There doesn't seem to be a specific fuse related to front lights to check unless I'm missing something?

Any ideas definitely welcomed!

Thanks,Tim

I would have gone with a fuse, used to be for headlamp main beam F7 , of course that changed with the MY13 where the headlamps changed but I would have thought there would still be a fuse.

Fuse was my first thought. That said, after reading & re-reading the manual along with inspecting the various fuse boxes, I can't see a single fuse that relates to dipped/full beams.

Front fogs have their own fuses, but nothing for the headlights.

It was an interesting drive home with just DRLs & fogs....

After about an hour's investigation by the LR Assist guy involving checking voltages & running diagnostics, the fault was found...

An open circuit on both headlights; also known as a pair of simultaneously-blown headlight bulbs!

We'd been happily assuming that it was rather unlikely that both bulbs would blow at the same moment, resulting in a somewhat more in-depth investigation...

Apparently it's a increasingly frequent issue on 2013 FL & Discos, with LR assist techs getting a service bulletin in the last few days asking them to start carrying a wider range of spare bulbs.

Think I'll ensure there's a set of spares in the car going forwards now, along with the necessary tools to fit as I'm guessing there's every potential it'll happen again at some point.

This has happened to me recently. I found it odd that both lights stopped working at the same time, the bulbs were the last thing I considered. I had an older set of bulbs that I popped in after checking fuses and the wiring and presto, it was working again.

I always carry a spare set of bulbs now, paranoid that it'll happen again during a long distance drive.

Perhaps now is the time to invest in osram nightbreaker plus bulbs?
Because you will be changing for another manunufacturr of bulb; should they double blow then the fault would lie with LR .

Perhaps manufacturers could be persuaded to have all headlamps blow in pairs. That would put a stop the the numpties who drive around the countryside with just one headlamp on in the dark.

Well how did the op get home. Time was.when it was unusual to see a vehicle with a faulty light due to the presence of plod. Now, I'd be rich if I had a pound for each vehicle that I saw with a lamp out.

Yes same again for me.

Took it to the local stealer; me thinking there is something wrong other than the bulbs going. Stung for £78 for checking the system and replacing 2 bulbs.

Think I might go to Halfords and ask for a LLR044458 whatever that is. Carry a couple of spare just in case.

This happened on my wife's rollerskate Up!
On my 04 freebie, both headlamp bulbs would go within a week of each other, after almost exactly 12 months - it was like clockwork! 2000 Xei 1.8 gone
2004 HSE Td4 Auto, MT's, sump guard, sliderz - gone

Is this a coincidence?

Ever since returning from the dealers the start-up process has changed.

Footbrake, press start button (lights come on) but not started, press start button again engine starts immediately.

Whereas before the engine started after the first button press.

Could it be that having the headlights come on at the same time as the engine starts can blow the bulbs, so they have changed the process to protect the bulbs?
