New Wide Angle Lens

Can I ask for some advice from those more knowledgeable than me please?

I need a new wide angle lens for work and as I see it my choice comes down to:

Nikon AF-S 10-24mm f3.5-4.5

Sigma 10-20mm f/4-5.6 EX DC HSM

I have a Nikon D3200 and the lens is for house interior shots. The Nikon lens is £290 more at Jessops so would I notice that much difference between the two. Once I have decided between the lenses I can then decide whether to buy new or from MPB as they are just down the road from me. Many thanks in advance.

Don't discount the Tokina 11-16mm F2.8 and 12-24mm F4........I have the 12-24 and use it on an old D300, it's a great lens, bullet proof build quality, great optically too.

Plenty of reviews on line for both........ Thumbs Up

I know the newer 12-24mm comes with a built in motor, not sure about the 11-16mm so might be worth checking if your 3200 doesn't have a screw drive built into the body?

Look around ref' prices as they can differ wildly between one and another......

@npinks - err I was hoping to get away without saying but at risk of opening up the floodgates for caustic comments I will say that I am an estate agent. I hasten to add RICS qualified but as my dear aged Mother puts it 'How's the shop doing?'

I have a wigma ( wide sigma ) and use it with my Canon 30D.

For interior shots, if you stand in the corner of a room, you can just about get all 4 walls of a room into the shot. Its very roughly a 90deg view that it gives. I.e. you would generally get the majority of the room floorspace into a shot

On paper, the Nikon has a slightly larger aperture at its widest (f3.5 versus f4 ) .. this has the *potential to allow for better low light shots which interiors often are. That being said, when lenses are wide open, they tend to have vignetting and blurring at the edges of the picture. Reading up on the reviews would give more information on just how much that applies to each of the lenses.

How accurate does the work need to be. Making an assumption that your taking photos for property sales etc, then I would go with the cheaper sigma, and use a monopod so that you can take stable pictures in low light. Most folk when looking at a brochure for a house are really only going to be concerned about what they can see in the shot clearly. the sigma will acheive that fine for the likes of brochure printing and web images.

You'll have to adjusted the skew a little to get your verticals level,

A lot of my shots a boring empty rental properties, nothing to use as a focal feature but these were taken with my lens and tweaked a little, but I think they look a little blurred, not sure why, maybe our website reducing them which I just grabbed them off Confused

All the lens's mentioned are good, I have used the Sigma 10-20 and found it very competent for interiors even at 10mm. The lens is "sharp" and can take a good amount of abuse! Any aperture greater than f4 should have pretty much everything in focus if you select a slightly closer focus point than the furthest point.

Nick,
Are you aware that you can download from Nikon distortion control? This can then be stored as a firmware update in your camera. For Nikon lens only. Even includes my ancient lenses Thumbs Up
This will ensure straight lines on your property shots without the need for post shot fiddling in Photoshop.

If you use a tripod to take property shots, have a look if your camera has either 'mirror lockup' or 'exposure delay' for a crisper shot Thumbs Up Another member of the failed FL2 clutch/DMF club, twice.
