As already said, all manufacturers have good and bad cars. Personally I think Audi is the worst manufacturer for reliability, my Audi is on 24000 miles and needs loads of work!

My company a4 put me of Audi ownership. In the short time I had it it had a new clutch, new DMF, new turbo, new anti roll bar and the fan belt tensioner broke leaving it without PS..

I liked it on the inside tho! Thumbs Up Freelander 2 TD4 Auto, SE, Narvik Black, Alpaca full leather, Rear Headrest Entertainment System, 6 CD, 18 HSE Wheels, Privicy tints

United Kingdom 2008 Freelander 2 TD4 SE Manual Santorini Black

Got shot of my FL2 and vowed never to get another, spent more ££££,s than I could imagine in my worst 9 month nightmare. Worst car I've owned in over 30 years of driving/car ownership for overall reliability, I have had more reliable £300 hacks with less problems.
I also know people that have never had a single problem but my personal experience was tragic. So I empathise with you mate, especially when your paying prestige prices to own something that drains the life out of your savings.

I would not right off a manufacture though, as you can see from my signature I have another proper Land Rover that has cost nothing in the last 5 years and has been 100% reliable even after lots of neglect.

There's a lot to be said for going the PCP route and changing cars when they're 3 yrs old. At least they're always under warranty!

Censored our first FL was PCP - dealer refused to honour 3 year warranty after first year, "too many miles sir", handed it back early and paid the penalty, after paying for two clutches, the gearbox and diff so noisey that Sabbath on full volume would drown them out at 30MPH.
Apparently the centre coupling had failed taking the gearbox, rear diff, tyres! & propshaft - this despite being dealer serviced 4 times a year.

PCP has nothing to do with the warranty though. You should have fought this one tooth and nail. I did when my clutch went and although the dealer got away with murder in my eyes and all my money, I still walked away with a good deal thanks to LR customer services. (Coming) 2016 RR Evoque td4 180 HSE Dynamc

Thanks for all your comments they were appreciated. Before retirement had over 30 years of company cars that were changed every 2 years with 75-80,000 miles on the clock and very few problems. Thought we would treat ourselves in retirement to our first Land Rover but expected more than 19,000 before a serious failure ! Have dealt with many main dealers in my lifetime and only 2 LR dealers who are by far the worst. My view is that LR pride themselves on a very loyal customer base that can be replied on for repeat orders come what may.

Anybody know anything about the Sale of Goods Act (SOGA) ? I understand that everything has an effective warranty of 6 years so why do we get manufacturers warranties of only 3 ?

Because the onus is on you to do something about it, manufacturers work on the theory if there is enough stonewalling the customer will give up, mainly due to not knowing their rights. In JLR s case the offer a sliding scale of contribution based on mileage and time out of warranty (probably the vehicle cost comes into it) and hope you go away happy rather than go for the lot in the courts. Small claims courts are quite cheap but you need to go for the dealer not JLR, JLR will look on in interest and possibly compensate the dealer should it go against them. my PC is slightly to the right of Genghis

Your posting this problem across multiple forums and slating Land Rover for a problem with a component that they buy in.
Why are you not slagging Haldex off?

If I have a major issue I would be speaking to the dealer and perhaps the Land Rover people on here, to start with a post that says first and last Land Rover, why should they bother to look after you, you have already burnt your bridges there.

They have offered you an amount, it is exactly that an offer, decline it politely and negotiate a better position, people on here have done so but don't expect too much after being so vocal.

Hope you get it sorted.

The failure of the Haldex unit is the icing on the cake after many other problems including HDC system failure which a main dealer has failed to diagnose after 4 annual services and 2 other times in their garage. It can't be left for more than 7 days without the battery going flat.
My contract is with the main dealer and not LR, that's the law. This is the 5th new car, of different makes, I have had from the dealer plus all my service contracts so assume I am a reasonable customer that they should have recognised with their dealings with LR.
Usually I trade my cars in before the 3 years is up to save 3rd service, MOT and road fund licence. Because of heavy financial commitments decided to change the Freelander in January 2014 and would have estimated the mileage at about 22,000 which I wrongly assumed was within the useful life of a Freelander. It would have been 4 and a half years old. I appreciate that there are tens of thousands of unserviced Freelanders doing millions of trouble free miles only wish I could be one of them !
My mileage 18,900.
I appreciate the Haldex unit is bought in by LR but that's their problem and I shouldn't have to contact the supplier.
Ironically I had a drink with an employee of the main dealers last night who informed me that the majority of sales of their Freelanders and Evoques are to women predominantly farmers wives as they are the preferred vehicle for the school run ! Perhaps that's where I went wrong !!

LR told me that they could build a Freelander in under 2 hours on a Friday afternoon. I said I know ! I bought it.!!

Feel for you mate - especially with such low mileage. My first LR was a FL2 in 2008 and it had an annoying knocking noise from 3 months old. I had a nightmare with 3 dealers trying to get it fixed, it eventually took 8 months to diagnose and fix, I even considered rejecting the vehicle but in the end once it was right it was the best car I have ever owned. Had another in 2011 and not had any problems other than a Haldex issue which was fixed under warranty. Personally I would never keep a FL2 after 3 years as I know if something goes wrong its always going to be expensive hence why I lease a new one every three years. My previous cars were 2 BMW's and they were the worst reliable cars I have ever owned - I got to know the local BMW Assistance guy on first name terms as I saw him that often.

Unfortunately every manufacture has these 'Friday' cars and looks like you got it but dont let your experience deter you from the brand. Try another dealer they are not all the same.

Thanks for that. Interestingly we found it one of the best tow cars we have ever owned and asked our dealer to source a new SD in January with a 3 year service contract. Needless to say we have cancelled it. I think that I have used the dealer for over 15 years for new cars and servicing but LR are selling so many cars one customer is neither here nor there.
Got the car booked in to have the Haldex replaced but don't suppose I will ever be told whether it was a faulty part, poorly fitted by LR or badly serviced by the main dealer.
Some good news. Whien I was sitting in the dealership while they were talking to LR I got into conversation with a farmers wife who had more problems with her Freelander than me ! She said her husband had a 12 year old Shogun that he couldn't get rid of. I bought it for £1,500 and in 3 days had it valeted, all the glass changed and the paint work 'clay barred'. Towed a boat to Southern Ireland last week and couldn't fault it !

Lease for 3 years then replace.

Still no excuse for what has happened to you though. Did you discuss the whole story with Liam @ LR?
He was a massive help to me and the only reason why I stuck with the brand. (Coming) 2016 RR Evoque td4 180 HSE Dynamc

I must admit that Liam's name has cropped up before. All the dealings with LR were done by my main dealer who I assumed would have much more clout than a loan buyer and I also assumed that it would be in their interest to get me a good deal and maintain what had been a loyal customer to them and even if I didn't go the LandRover route they have several franchises at their disposal.

It's interesting that every time my Freelander goes to the main dealer they send me an email to the effect you will be receiving, in the next few days, a questionnaire from Land Rover. If you have received exceptional service from us please convey this in your reply to the questinnaire. If not please contact our service manager***********.

That way Land Rover should get no negative views !

Hi Bill, please try to speak to lr directly through liam if needs,

i must admitt that i dont give my dealer exceptional ever because they are doing there job, yes i do get calls from the dealer i then explain why they dont get exceptional, for me it was a clip on the d3 tow bar cover, i keep forgetting about it till i tow, they have it in for service pop a clip in it, its a 50p part.

its the attention to detail on the small things.

anyway i hope you get this sorted to a more satisfactory outcome. My11 freelander 2, xs, Manual, 18" hse sparkles, sidesteps, privacy, zermatt silver metallic, almond nutmeg alacantra, twin electric towbar

...and I think the most common answer to the question "what differences do you want to see in a new LR?" is " Make sure your dealerships live by the lofty standards they profess and when they don't, sting them properly."

It's a matter of honour and dishonesty. Sure some cars will develop faults but with the amount we pay for cars vs the amount they cost to make and sell, when something goes wrong, warranty or not, it should be fixed without argument.

I have to say that the best service I have ever received was from a Merc Benz Lookers dealership. There was no job too small, couldn't be friendlier and never haggled over anything; which is why I bought another car from them. What goes around... If the product is not as great as the marketing, this is misleading people into buying on a false premise. Let's bring some honour into selling, again.

I get the impression that LR dealerships are good when they're good and bad when they're bad. I will have my first experience of their 1yr extended warranty service promise when it goes in for whatever the noise is coming from the gearbox (as mentioned in my previous posting and that of several other forum members). We can all be fair and unfair and I hope that in the OP's case, that JLR would go out of their way to sort out this person's issues without argument or nit picking. Internal politics isn't something customers should be involved in or suffer, so if there's something going on between JLR and LR dealerships, it should never be aired or foisted on the public. Whereabouts unknown stop going to follow stream until reach civilisation stop message ends
