Best 235/60 R18 ATR/Semi ATR Tyres?

Hi, new owner here!

Just bought a 2007 Freelander 2 HSE (TD4), and the tyres on it are purely road-only tyres. As I've just come from a Defender, I was wondering what is the best option was for some decent semi-atr or atr tyres in this?

Would still like to keep tyre/road noise to a minimum, but also a tyre that handles medium off-road and snow/ice with ease would be great.

What options are there in 235/60 R18?

Thanks for you help!
Alex

Hi Alex.

Not much choice but recently General made a tyre in this size.

Details here:

Thanks! They look pretty good. Does anyone have any experience with them in the 235 size? Interested in road noise/mpg changes?

I saw a set of those in 19's on a Disco 4 last weekend. They were very good indeed. I would buy them.

Can anyone who has these let me know about mpg changes? Don't want to lower it too much!

Thanks

I've recently fitted a set of these in 235/65/17. Only done a bit over 1,000 miles on them so far, and nothing challenging, but first impressions are good. Too soon to say, really, on fuel consumption, but I haven't noticed a significant drop.

2007 Freelander 2 TD4 GS Manual Zermatt Silver

I always found the standard goodyears very competent in snow and on ice, never got stuck in any field either though i didnt go mud plugging in them. got 30k miles out of each of two separate sets.

Had a set of michelin s after that which would have 40k miles if you ran them right down to legal limits i changed at 3mm after another approx 30k miles.

Now on Michelin latitude cross and they have been more than able in the snow this winter and again never got stuck off roads.

On all sets i have averaged low to mid 30s. 07 manual GS. The last set of michelins are a tad noisier but not much more than goodyears and they do have a noticeably more aggressive tread pattern.

I've had them on for about 500 miles in 235/60x18 size. No change in noise or mpg that I can notice.

They look good too!

Thanks for all your replies, really helpful.

Got it down to 2 tyres, now trying to decide between the Grabber AT's & Michelin Latitude Cross.

I doubt that you'd be disappointed with either (although I have no direct experience of the Michelins). Michelins are more road-oriented, and have a better wet braking rating. Grabbers should be better off road, and have the advantage of being a bit cheaper, but a worse wet braking rating.

Thanks Pab.

The main issue for me is loss of mpg, and increased road noise (assuming I went for the grabber at)

But doesn't seem to be too much of an issue based on people's replies, so will give them a go!

Hello Alex
Welcome fellow Sussex owner !
It would be worth speaking to Andy at AJS (site sponsor) to see what he could do for you. He is only 20 minutes from Gatwick and he saved me money even with the travelling. I think he has the 235 60 18 Grabbers in stock now but if not he's a font of all tyre option knowledge. _________________

Hello!

Thanks for that, gave him a call earlier and spoke about the grabber at's, however doing a bit more research I've decided to go for the Michelin latitude cross, they seem to be a great compromise as I want to keep the noise low and mpg high, whilst also having decent (semi) atr tyres. Unfortunately Andy didn't have any of these in stock Sad
